i have sam6 and i like it. i would bet that sam7 sounds better than 6 but that's only a guess. i love sam for mastering and burning cds. i don't like the way that sam's mixer is integrated with the arrange window in 6 and so i don't like to mix with it. also, sam seems pretty weak in the midi dept.

sx is the better all around app(and yes, I like the way it sounds better than sam6) compared to sam6 in my book.

for simple audio tasks, sam is superior imo.

one should be able to get professional, grammy worthy results out of ANY of the apps in this thread, providing one had the material to record and skill as an engineer to realize one's goals., so, use what ya like.

My two cents:
SX or Nuendo...

Aah yes - but I'm stuck with the windows cul de sac.
If you have a new p4 windows machine and logic 5.5.1 you are not really that bad off.
Should you still ever run out of power there are the fx freeze and fx teleport applications available at very nice prices.
logic/creamware have ben very stable for me ever since xp...sure theres some nice things in logic 6, but not any I cant do without...and speed wise a fast well set up pc is very fast.

sure but there are apps which makes you feel more conforatble than others
I agree SX is the overall best because it is quite simple and has all that is necessary (but i don't agree with Gary's opinion on the stock plugin).

SAM7 has a better midi than any previous version but i'm not sure it is yet comparable to any other midi/audio sequencer(version 8 is out soon anyway).

My first pc sequencer was cakewalk, and after 4 days i goit refund and replugged the atari with notator and the fostex R8

All is personal taste....

I started out with the really old Cubase VST, then on to Logic 4.6 and now Cubase SX 2.0.

In hindsight switching to Cubase SX was my best move ever. Intuitive, easy to learn/use. Im very happy with it.
An eye for an eye, and soon the whole world is blind.

There are just a couple of issues with ASIO: recorded audio gets shifted ahead of where it's supposed to be, so you have to put a delay corresponding to the ULLI latency on the recording channels;
Shane can you tell me more. i didn't find any problem with such a thing or can't figure  can you explane plz
thanks

Anyone using Tracktion? That's another potential option for me - cheaper than SX etc, nice workflow and good track freezing.

Well, I found that if I recorded something into Sonar via ASIO, the recorded audio would start playing exactly XX.Xms before it should, depending on what the ULLI was set to. That's fixed if you put a delay before the ASIO dest channels in Scope. I made up some presets you can download here. The presets are for Scope's Delay S. When you load the preset, set dry to 0 and wet to 127, and everything will work perfectly! Of course, if you don't have this problem for some reason, there's no need to bother.

I do. It works great for me as I mix in the SFP environment and just treat Tracktion as a tape-deck and midi-sequencer.

The reason why I choose Tracktion is basically because it has no internal mixer (it uses vector-mixing by the use of filters which you can simply remove if you like). That way all audio and midi is routed to SFP via ASIO.

Also, it is quite cheap. It has a great project- and archive-function with compression ability.
You can also do some heavy routing inside Tracktion using the so called rack-filters.
I have not had the need to use freeze yet, though.

Cool - I just bought it

That is exactly how I intend to use it as well.

Thanks

Ick!! You've got issues. I'm using S3.1.1 with asio and it's sample accurate. Not sure why you are having those problems.

FWIW, I have SX 2 and sonar and nuendo at the studio. For music creation I greatly prefer Sonars interface and stability over the other 2. As garyb said though, it has way more to do with the guy behind the desk than the actual tools when you are talking good apps like the ones in this thread.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I still use Logic 5.51 and don't intend on switching anytime soon.

I'm using Cubase SX 2.0. I like it. I keep hearing that Tracktion is really good and original. I might get that. It's cheap too.

Renoise, a "next generation" tracker. To me it's sort of a super-sampler with built in audio editor, and I slave Reason and the Pulsar II to it.

Unfortunately, like FL Studio, it can't compensate for the latency needed in order to get results out of XTC.

I try to remember, when shopping for new toys, that DJ Shadow did Entroducing with an 8track, an ancient AKAI rubber-pad sampler, a bunch of 45s, and a good drummer.

Not exactly cutting edge given when the album came out. Yet the album is still a perrenial classic and far more inventive and fresh than most of the garbage flooding ye old frequencies these days, even with (or perhaps because of) the major advances in Audio workflow tools.

Having said that, I just bought the upgrade to SX 2.2 as my 1.06 had this nasty habit of magically bringing my machine to its knees, right in the middle of my doing something really cool. SFP usually still worked fine and would still respond to Midi controllers, though without the ASIO module working, it isn't as much fun.

So many of you like CUBASE SX.
I used to use Cubase and found it extremly
square, unnatural and full of bugs. Also a
huge CPU cycles chewer, even before any
processing had beeb done.
So I bought Orion Platinum. And voila,
inspiration to realisation path shortend quite a bit. It is as quick as Reason and
sounds as good as Cubase.
The only thing is.... XTC mode doesn't work
in Orion. Sh+++.
