STEP-BY-STEP
GUIDE

This is an exact description how to replicate my problems with MIDI controllers and Creamware Scope 4. Before I start I’d like to point out that my problems extends to many synthesizers, not just MINIMAX as I used as my example. I also noticed this with Pro-One (the Creamware version), Uberplastic (synth demo from Wavelength), and if my memory serves me right, Prodyssey as well.

HOWEVER... I have NO problems what so ever, with OLDER devices that uses the old big blue preset selector. I’ve tried it with Synchrome 1.2 – no problem and most of the older Wavelength synthesizers, such as Plastic, Coma and Avalon Euro. I had no problems with John Bowens version of the Pro One either.

MINIMAX EXAMPLE

1) Connect MINIMAX. Sequencer MIDI Source to mixer. You can see my exact setup here.
2) I will use two preset sounds as examples: ’A True Classic!’ in Bank Creamware 1, and ’Attack Baz’ in the Peter Kirschker bank.

3) Double-click on ’A True Classic!’. It will sound like THIS.
4) Double-click on ’Attack Baz’ (patch number 8). It will sound like THIS.

5) Right-click on the RANGE knob for oscillator 1.
6) Manually enter the number 75 in the NEW box.
7) Click the MIDI + sign to assign the controller.

8) Right-click on the RANGE knob for oscillator 2.
9) Manually enter the number 76 in the NEW box.
10) Click the MIDI + sign to assign the controller.

11) Right-click on the RANGE knob for oscillator 3.
12) Manually enter the number 77 in the NEW box.
13) Click the MIDI + sign to assign the controller.

14) Right-click on the WAVEFORM knob for oscillator 1.
15) Manually enter the number 78 in the NEW box.
16) Click the MIDI + sign to assign the controller.

17) Right-click on the WAVEFORM knob for oscillator 2.
18) Manually enter the number 79 in the NEW box.
19) Click the MIDI + sign to assign the controller.

20) Right-click on the WAVEFORM knob for oscillator 3.
21) Manually enter the number 80 in the NEW box.
22) Click the MIDI + sign to assign the controller.

Now we have assigned six different MIDI CCs to six different knobs. Should be like this:

23) Go to the Creamware 1 Bank and double-click on ’A True Classic!’. It will now sound like THIS..

24) Go to the Peter Krishker Bank and double-click on ’Attack Baz’. It will sound like THIS..

I am currently thinking two things.

Why does'nt older devices have this problem?

Could this be related in _any_ way to the Pulsar I card? I know it sounds far-fetched, but as far as I read the Pulsar I can be a source of problems. I must, however, point out that I've got a Pulsar II as my "main" card.

Equipment
CPU: Pentium 4 2,2 GHz.
Memory: 512 MB.
Video card: Matrox G550.
OS: Windows XP Professional.
Sequencer: Cubase SX 2.02.
Scope version 4 (the latest available).
Creamware cards: two Pulsar II and one Pulsar I (16 DSPs in total).

A few more observations.

I've just removed the Pulsar I and my second Pulsar II card. No difference.

I also tried by running Scope in Classic mode. No difference.

Nope. Ralf sent me an updated file before the summer. Nothing else happened since. I'll send another mail to him.

Carl.
