All this brings me a question: Do you like Vangalis?

For me it can be too romantic sometimes, and I need more action there... but I recognize a real talented musician.

I like most of all, a few of his first albums and the use the Rodhes sounds... fantastic...

I will first say that I highly regard Vangelis, as he is clearly an important figure in the evolution of electronic music, as we know it today. As for my feelings about his music... I enjoy his earlier stuff and even albums like "Albedo 0.39" and "Spiral", and his soundtrack for "Blade Runner" is actually one of my all-time favourites. I can say the same about very early Tangerine Dream but, like Vangelis, the whole "New Age"-vibe seemed to take-over and stink up the place, eventually.

"Chariots of Fire" has appeared on too any "Pure Moods" and "Instrumental Favourites" compilations (basically rendering it "muzak")... and unfortunately Vangelis is mostly associated which such things, these days.

It is an odd thing that much of the electronic acts of the late-sixties/early-seventies that I love went "down-hill" around the same time that digital synthesis (and sequencing) came on the scene (+ the New Age movement... yich... ack... sffft).

Reading this topic and some replies I remember to the 70s as I went to school.
Nobody had the courage to say: I like ABBA. We all said: Let me hear Led Zeppelin, UFO etc.
Bu at home, in secret, we listened to ABBA music and we enjoyed!!!
So: Of course Vangelis is very romantic sometimes, surely he has the most expensive Lexicon reverb, but it seems, he is really a technical guru, he CAN use his equipment.
And I have so many friends who like this, especially 1492 (maybe this is related to the great film scenes and pictures).
Guys, I don't want to offend anybody, really. I only try to be righteous.
Yours Thomas

I like Vangelis' music a lot, but generally I don't find it to be as memorable, exciting, and inspiring as Jean-Michel Jarre, whom I hold to be the "Master of all Synthesizers." JMJ can do almost anything and it's incredible, whether it's jazz, ambient, rock, or "experimental."

well, with that heritage, what would you expect...

let's take JMJ as an example to rest a short moment and thank whoever may be responsible that those days are over for us owners of Lunas, Pulsars and Scopes.

No more famous father or wealthy grandma needed - just inspiration, talent and enthusiasm

cheers, Tom

I'd take Vangelis's music over JMJ's any day... even though 'Chariots of Fire' is utter cheese

Stuff like 'Memories of Green' is very atmospheric and beautiful. And his jazzier stuff is pretty nice, if a little on the noodly side.

Always liked "The Enid" myself.

Robert John Godfrey's smocks rock!

...and they're still going (looks like Carl Palmer's still bashing things too):

They are the absolute masters of their art and their achievements over more than twenty years of creative work set them apart from everything else which calls itself progressive."

I am sorely tempted to purchase a ticket!

Just thought I would put in a plug for what I feel is a very expressive master control board for the SFP enviro -- the KORG Z1. It has nice tactile knobs, an X-Y pad (got to try with Vectron), and some really cool sounds in its own right! It's true, I am in love and wouldn't trade it for any other synth controller. Can anyone recommend a good board for weighted piano keys?

I haven't foud better keyboard than what is in Alesis QS8 -series.

The only defect is that the keys in upper range are not lighter in touch than keys in lower. (like in real piano).
There are a few keyboards that have this feature.. I think the best Roland RD-models are one of those.
