How to connect XITE 1 to a laptop or mini-pc without Express card

Post by fra77x2 »

Hello to all, it 's been a while.

I' m interested about future compatibility of the Xite1 and how to connect it to a laptop or to a mini-pc without express card. Is there any option available like an interface of express card to USB 3.0 converter?

I think that in the market there are still laptops with express card slot but will this still apply for the upcoming years?

I'm not really interested about the desktop option because I prefer laptops and even better I' m interested to a mini-pc preferably fan-less. Anyone aware if such a mini-pc with express card slot exists, or if an interface with USB 3.0 that is compatible with the Xite 1?

Regards,
John

USB and PCIe are two different things. there is no adapter that i know of.
there IS a Expresscard to Thunderbolt adapter from Sonnet Technologies that works, but reports are that it does not work on a Thunderbolt/USB3 combo port.

There are pci to expresscard adapters. I guess there are also pcie to expresscard adapters.
Using USB doesn't sound ideal to me, as the basic architecture of drivers is completely different to the pci world.

I found this page:

https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/get- ... unct-ports

and in page 12/13 about ExpressCard 34 / 54 it points to this product

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001K ... merReviews

Unfortunately it does not offer PCI express support.

So currently the only option for laptop is these that come with an express card?

GaryB what do you mean by "Thunderbolt/USB3 combo port" ? That the thunderbolt plug should only offer "thunderbolt" interface and no USB3?
It is the same USB-C cable?

Is there a chance this mini-pc to work with the mentioned Expresscard to Thunderbolt adapter?

who knows?

the Sonnet Technology adapter works, but YES, there ARE combo ports and YES, they DO use a USB-c connector. beware.

Yes who knows? I just put it here in case someone has the opportunity to test this. The last minor culprit in my setup is the low level noise of the laptop fans which sometime in the future I would like to eliminate. I think a Xite1 with a USB-c / thunderbolt connector would be nice.
