clicks with envelopes in modIII

Post by hifiboom »

okay, I need some help:
Sometimes I get note on clicks when I use an envelope to control a VCA at very short attack values. Is this normal.?
Its very well audible especially if there is a low pass filter in front of exponential VCA, that is set to a lower frequency....

If this is due to the fact that the oscillators are running free, wouldn`t it be a good idea to retrigger them to the note on?

at least as an option? a multioscillator with a gate trigger?

yeah, sometimes it even does not sound annoying, but I wanna decide if it clicks or not....

I think I`ll try a new patch with the Flexor SAW GATE OSC...
If that helps I hope to see a multi waveform OSC ( saw, sin, square,...) in F2

Hi everybody....

found the perfect solution on my own....

the trick is to run the sound in following order:
osc -> VCA -> Filter

osc -> filter -> VCA gets the clicks at the attck and decay with lower attack and release numbers...

cheers thats very great !!!!

hey.

try putting a 6db lowpass filter between the adsr out and the vca mod input,
or,
if you have flexor, put a control smoother module between the adsr out and th vca mod input.

This control smoother is a great thing, try it on a lfo with a random wave, connect the smoother output to a x/y elastic (what you see is what you get) and use the x / y output to drive a filter cutoff/reso or pitch of an OSC.

inded :D
the cw random sig generators are so harsh and squarish, what u mentioned is a great way to get more rounded random mods, great tip

faxi, the other trick works fine too and don`t eat up any ressources....

These clicks them to appear only with the exponential VCA.... behind a filter...

the other trick works fine, but you are forced to close the fiter a little... if you want an open filter sound then this doesnt work

I don`t unterstand? what do you mean, it works at every filter possition.

also with an opened filter. maybe I did not explain correctly? :P

very simple

the clics occure with the envelope is faster than the sound passing through it, generating a small transient at the begining of the sound.
clicks can be nice if the osc is retrigered and they all sound the same but nasty if it slices the osc in a different place each time.

puting a filter after the VCA works only with a lowpass filter (that filters the trasient) and with shapes like square and saw. fortunately we have MANY more filter and osc choices to use and thats where faxis's trick can play in handy, since it gives a nice logarithmic smoothing (our ear likes it!) or just make your attack times a bit longer. if you want the sound realy punchy you can modulate the attack time acording to the pitch.

clicks are easily avoided, but are hard to tame :)

RED,

the clicks are really a strange phaenomena!

Sometimes I have them and sometimes not....

Last time I had them I tried to isolate the clicks, and cut away all oscillators (sound sources) from my mod patch.
But the clicks still remain ! so the envelope has its own sound... not good at all, seems like a bug in modular.

the envelope should not affect a zero wave.... :x

haahahha actualy if you download my mmod stash in the modular section, there is a whole directory of patches that make noodle noises out of that envelope click eheheh ;) :D 8)

maybe its just a small bug in the CW VCA (exponential, linear)?
