Quad Space Shepard Generator

Post by dawman »

Maybe this multiplies the number of Sheep by adding Quad Shepard’s or something, I don’t know.

Still want to know what SC Autogate is.
And what the hell is this Quad Space Shepard Generator?

Well, remember when u were a kid, ure parents told you to count sheep to get to sleep as they jump over a gate. If there are no Shepards there to control them they continuously rise instead of falling back to the ground.

So you get a continuously rising tone as they bleat. Stockhausen tried to tame them in Hymnen but it didn’t work - they rose polyphonically. As soon as one tone hit the top it started again at the bottom of the gate.

I believe there were some kinda mushrooms in the same field.

I think the autogate is a simple gate sequencer in which one can set the volume of each gate..
www.forums.scopeusers.com/viewtopic.php ... 6&p=335698&

But it works only on my PCI system, not the Xite-1.

And the Quad Shepard seems to do like Shepard tone but in a quad panoramic system.. So it looks like a complicated autopan but useless on only stereo.

Haven´t installed SCOPE 7 up to now,- but ...

The basics of a shepard generator are explained on page 12 of the Doepfer A191 eurorack module manual.

Quote:

5. Shepard generator

5.1 Basics

A Shepard generator is a modulation oscillator, which produces various phase inversions of triangle and sawtooth waveforms at its outputs.
The way the Shepard generator is set up produces various psycho-acoustic phenomena, such as the ‘barber-pole’ effect - seemingly never-ending upward or downward spirals of pitch, filter settings, phasing and stereo or quadraphonic sound-stage panning (see chapter 5.3, User examples).

I hope that helps for the S|C variant as well.

Yes ! Sure Shepard tone ! But how do you obtain a shepard tone with the quad shepard device when it modulates only the pan between all its outputs ?
Di you try it ?

Not yet as I’m reading up on how Hans Zimmer used his application of Shepard Tones.
I know there’s lots of brilliant composers from the past through today, incredibly gifted.
But the ZMan just knocks it out of the park with originality and never sticking to a formula.

I mean I can her Williams, Goldsmith, Enrico Morricone, but no way can anyone go yeah, that’s Hans Zimmer.
The dude is inside, outside, he’s fucking everywhere.
I could just see him listening to his work on a private IMAX theater he rents out.
Jotting down notes to go and fix.
He doesn’t rest once the check clears at the bank.

Must be nice to make so much money doing what you love.

Meanwhile back at the ranch.....
I’m off Sunday and will see what I can accomplish.
Got lots of cool licks that would get circular pretty quick.

Cheerz.

Have fun with the Xeon death machine.
Scalable 612s are some serious number crunchers.

Some time ago, I tried to produce shepard tones and I've found some web sites where they explain how to achieve them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepard_tone
https://music.tutsplus.com/tutorials/so ... udio-10219

Long time ago, before one uses personnal computer for music, I've seen a tv documentary where a guy obtained the same process through 4 phasers, the result was an infinite phaser up or down. Beautiful !

Getting into the deep cuts there with Stockhausen... At a more innocent age I thought those were shortwave radio sounds.

Well I got a new Toy for Monophonic Analog Leads.
I’m taking SE-02 outputs into the R125 vrs. 2 where it gets a Strymon Timeline Bucket Brigade Delay, but also goes into the QSSG where the magic happens.
2/1 speed rate makes the effect slow, Envelope is also useful for blended the QSSG Effect with the SE-02 + Strymon.
I don’t know the scientific names or anything but let’s say there’s lots of motion making it a pleasure to hold a note where the Synths Cutoff/filter has a little attack also, so the brightening up of the filter coincides with the QSSG and it’s fascinating.

To get me to not trill or get all Eddie Van Halen on a synth is saying something.
I’m just beginning to o have fun with this.

Also noticed no MIDI on here, so I Gus’s that’s something to be added at a later date.

I’m anxious to hear it played back.

Almost forgot, 4 x Black Box Filters in the inserts is next.
Each Filter will be a different flavor too...

Happy New Years and put some lights on those Yellow Vests, a fashion statement...

Great to read someone testing it w/ synths and other outboard gear for live performance.
Sounds promising !

thx for sharing and happy new year too !

Hey the Brickwakk EQ is really nice, but not for instruments, as only old graphic or parametric will do.
Brick wall is a nice threshold type of EQ so if you stick it on your Delay or Reverb AUX/Channel you can shape your effect to fit each preset on a sample of synth.
For example, I love Gated Reverb on Horn Sections, but it always gets too bright at loud Stabs or Staccotto articulations, you can get some great tones on FX using this.

I’m going after Auto Gate next.

I do that reverse envelope type of sound on the SE-02 where the EG swells up on release.
The song Moves Like Jaggef has this sound so I’m already that and a pad plus the whistle in a3rd zone.
AutoGate might really help get that click at the beginning of the sound.

We’ll see said the blind man.

I’m waiting for Cockos to send me a license for Reaper so I can

I’m onto AutoGate, Brickwall EQ just has to wait.
My need for instant gratification outweighs the plug ins usefulness.

And Astro I’m in a Disco/Funk/HipHop band that groves really well.
I’m really liking that slap bass sound, been years since I grooved like this.
