disable usb ports that share an irq with the cards. do this in the device manager.
use a usb hub, if necessary.

however, if everything works properly, don't do anything....

Of course, I forgot that I have a usb hub ) it really closes all issues with usb.
Thanks, garyb.

yes, that will work. Noctua makes a good product. i have one.
yes, a 3 pin fan will work, but you'll want an adapter cable.

I actually had exactly the same. My graphic card just quit. I replaced it with a very simple one. I did notice on diagnosing things get really hot in the HP. The fans work as supposed but don't go crazy. I think at the processor side of the Mobo everything is okay, but in the PCI region there's no metering and insufficient airflow. No pre-made place for an extra fan, unfortunately, so I'm thinking about placing a fan at the front to get some (more) air inside.

Lately my Scope just stalls without any warning or message to pick up again a few seconds later. Never had that before. Could that be a heat issue?

it might be.
a PC like an XW series is made for use as a 24/7 workstation. it's cooling is normally sufficient. there is an air filter that can get clogged, and it's possible that the fans are working, but not working as they should. you should not need any extraordinary efforts. i use 2 15 dsp cards and a 6dsp card and it does not overheat. the room is a reasonable temperature....

If there's enough clearance on the door, is it possible to cut a side fan?

I didn't do this on my Scope machine ( which isn't that HP anyway ), but on one of my bigger dual Xeons I put a 120mm on the door as an intake because it blows across the PCIe slots, and it helped the GPU's I used to run on that box a lot. This was for quadro's back in the nvidia G82/G92 era when 'solder-gate' era, the fan protected the GPU's from the bump-solder connections becoming desoldered due to high heat and prolonged their life considerably compared to other users.
