Re: AMD CPU's

Thanks fraz! Just a reminder that for audio work, regardless of AMD or Intel, Faster cores > More cores. 3700X gets my vote :) OK, but the 3900 X 12C/24T does have exceptional single threaded performance according to the reviews but the Asus Prime X370-A is limited in what it can handle from the VR...

Re: AMD CPU's

This is the board I was talking about - If anyone does buy one of these boards, the 3rd GEN 3700 X would be the most the board could handle properly as it's rated at 65 W (maybe 3800 X ). Whilst it has 2 PCI slots which is useful for us the technical aspects of the board (current handling) are limit...

Re: PCI-e to PCI extender for Scope ( experiment going to be a solution :) )

Yes I agree having looked at one of these - It is like a miniature motherboard, where there are 4 standoffs to screw into a case chassis which would be additional to the motherboard so working something out would be a little difficult

Re: PCI-e to PCI extender for Scope ( experiment going to be a solution :) )

Looking at the little PCB where the 2 x PCI slots are, there is a black vertical connector (SATA power)___that would connect to the PSU "power supply unit" for the computer. A good PSU would have a cable to connect to this to provide power from the PSU to the PCB for the 2 x PCI slots - Ju...

Re: Disk imaging for your DAW

Hello Valis, When I've done the backups - it isn't with a view to restore (my angle was to have master original & cloned backups for an original install of Windows and drivers. If there was lots of music apps installed over a period of time then it would make sense to re-clone (ticking the box f...

Re: Disk imaging for your DAW

Hello Valis, I've done a lot of PC installations of Windows 10 for me and others - I did try Macrium Reflect (free)_it needs to be registered though via an email address, then a pass code is generated for installation on multiple machines for the purpose of backup / clone - I've even used to clone f...

Z170 INTEL & XEON E3 SERIES

Hi, Do the Intel Z170 chipsets work with the Xeon E3 family processors? - On Z97 1150 they do (E3 V3 V4 do)__but on Z170 they may not be ???? I've checked out 1 x MSI board and 1 x Asus board in the Z170 category and neither show the E3 V5 (Skylake=6700 K) nor the E3 V6 (Kaby Lake = 7700 K) - So are...

Re: Best mobo and cpu combo

First of all, if you have had it up and running on this motherboard, you should be able to get it up and running again. I would only install the 15dsp card, and rather expand when you get that up and running... if you do. Second, The H310 Chipset is generally a VERY weak/cheap chipset that should b...

Just to add a little more - a benchmark for the AMD 3900 X 12 core - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+9+3900X&id=3493 And to have a look at the league table as it were - !!! - for AMD vs Intel Hi-End = With the 3900 X currently in top spot so when ever the 3950 X arrives which ...

AMD CPU's

Hi, Just in case anyone is interested - Below is an AMD motherboard with 2 x PCI slots -X370 chipset & PCI-e GEN 2 for the slots but 2 x PCI slots that will work with the 3rd gen AMD CPU's such as 3700 X / 3800 X / 3900 X. A benchmark from CPU benchmark with a very high score for an 8 core CPU h...

Re: H130 Chipset (X370 related)-1151

Hi,

Just want to correct a typo=error in the title that states H310 chipset (X370 related)_____error-____it should read Z370 related 1151 as H310 is an Intel chipset that I'd not heard of and it was meant as a means of describing the higher end chipset Z370 >>>> that H310 is related to.

Re: 64bit & PCI

Do you really need 3 x PCI slots? - Is 2 PCI a no go? - Asus and Gigabyte have 3 x PCI slots on H310 chipset - 2 fewer PCI-e chipset lanes than Z97 so 6 in total-not many but enough---and newer CPU's can be used

Yes, different machines for different tasks - and you've mentioned another couple of apps I've not even heard of (thanks)_ On RMA, I've dealt with Gigabyte for two boards to have a new socket for used boards that had bent pins -very smooth process -the only potential snag is the need to use MS EXCEL...

Re: Asus Crossblade Ranger

Ah Supermicro, I did speak to them and was considering one of their boards but never did get one !!! - I've heard they are very good. There was another industrial board that DAWMAN was talking about (forgot the name) which was for the Coffee Lake CPU's and XEON E processors equivalent to the 8700K -...

fraz, just a note that I was directing you towards potentially more informative resources. Re: New Windows 10 installation - how should I tune it?

I can't comment on Windows services but I am interested in that to get the optimum installation. OK, I've created the Windows media installation tool - so it looks like what I bought off Amazon was exactly that but I didn't realize this. Due to the work I've got done there are no complaints and now ...

Re: New Windows 10 installation - how should I tune it?

I'm just creating one now - although I bought one from Amazon for around £14 which installs Windows 10 32 and 64. The one I'm creating from the link below is for 32 and 64 but I'm not sure if it is Windows 10 Pro or not - but I'll see how this pans out for the next install which may be helpful to yo...

Re: New Windows 10 installation - how should I tune it?

Have you got a USB installer for Windows 10? - If not, get one - it doesn't have to be a new copy of Windows 10 - Just a rescue/recovery/Windows 10 USB installer - I got one off Amazon a few days ago..... With the USB Windows 10 rescue/recovery/etc..... you install Windows 10 but use the Windows 7 l...
