I recommmend using 24bit so you don't have to pay attention to levels so much like you would with 16bit.

Don't confuse recording at 24bit with mixing at 24bit as the mixing bit depth is higher.

Sounds like your mixing bits and sample rate together into some problem that doesn't exist. Distortion from lack of bit depth is solved from dither and is done perfectly when applied correctly.
