I agree about the stock compressor, it does not sound good to me either. I'm sure there are a few others as well that are not good but in general i do find most of the stock to be good. Atleast to my taste.

The 14dsp is good starting point, but if your looking to get deep with SCOPE then XITE-1 as stated above . Also several cards can be chained together for added power.
