Could anyone recommend a completely basic synth that I could play just using the standard keyboard of my laptop ?

I never think of tunes when I'm actually at my music computer, but always when I'm daydreaming in front of my laptop. So it would really just be for getting my note bearings ...

I'm not sure about the specifics of rack-mount cases, but I'm sure that you could get away with a VERY limited computer if you're just using synths - all the hard work happens in the card.
