Crackles in audio with Reaper

hi People,

I've been using Reaper with my Scope 5.1 setup for quite a while,
but lately I've noticed I'm regularly getting "crackles" in my audio.

These are just single internittant spikes in the audio, causing a sharp
crackling like sound. I checked the output of my Korg trinity and it's not that.

I route my instruments thru a Behringer 8-channel audio ADAT interface.
It sounds fine going into the 24 channel mixer and routed thru a bus to
ASIO drivers.

But once I send it to Reaper and bounce it back to the mixer and
add FX etc, that's where the crackles happen. I'm recording in
44.1 / 24 bit.

I've gotten comfortable with Reaper and would really like to keep
using it. I've got older "LE" versions of Sonar and Cubase, but not really
into the learning curve at this point.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

Gary

its not Reaper.

what version of Windows are you using?

crackles can be CPU overruns, or FX overloads, or clock issues, or....

yes, a lot of reasons possible... starting with dirt/bad TosLink cables going to gear not liking some sync modes.
If Scope is clock master, then the Adat converter must be set to slave mode, which may not work well.
Or the converter doesn't slave well to the 44.1 rate - which I just recently experienced with a Digi 882/20 in S/PDIF mode with Scope as sync source. Set to 48k it worked. Sometimes it's not like written in books...

I also had cracking with reaper (luna+ pulsar2 connected to an a16 ultra)
Finally it was the appropriate connection technology that was at issue, if the connector is not completely in its place, it will only be half a millimeter and it will cause cracking.

in Windows 10, it's a pretty good idea to disable One Drive.
Windows continues to try to use and install it. it eats a lot of cpu cycles and it definitely leads to crackles.
