Intel C236 Build

Post by dawman »

Q370 works, and now I’m building a C236 w/ an Asus P10m WS.
XEON E-1275 vrs. 6 will be the CPU.

Since newer chips from Intel and AMD keep showing up, yesterday’s chips are even cheaper.
This will be my new live rig.
Will post results here next week.

400 bucks for the motherboard and CPU.
RAM, NVMe and SSDs we’re old spare hardware never used.

Chassis is the Supermicro CSE-512 600B

Fingers crossed.
My first Scope 7 Windows 10 build.

Asus just updated their BIOS for the 3rd time with this chipset.
6/21/2018 to be exact.
Nice long life PCB and the chips are high binned, no overclocking.

Very lean build.
Dual Samsung 850 Pros from a 4U spare rarely used.
But a new MyDigitalSSD NVMe M.2 specifically for Omnispahere/Keyscape samples.
They load like an old hardware sampler.
No smart Algos that realize you already have a certain Rhodes loaded so it loads multis from scratch.
NVMe is so fast the normally seen yellow progress bar is never seen. These dogs hunt.

I always love the newest stuff, but right before I make a decision I check the support areas for BIOS updates.
The Asus board got its last update in June.
It’s safe to assume after 3BIOS Updates this board works well.

Plus I checked my CPU after ditching Zebra2 HZ and Omnisphere.
Now I have Keyscape which loads like an old sampler, so it gets the NVMe.
Everything else uses very little.
So old designs, lower temps and less watts.

Hard to pass up.

Still fascinated with the very latest though.
Ompetition is working in our favor.

We're plateauing as we reach below 7nm. What to do at 3nm? 3D Xpoint & HBM are both exercises in going more vertical, but there's limits to heat dissipation that way too. So after many decades of us older cogs dealing with the constant upgrade slog, we're at a point where it's getting difficult to bottleneck most of our tasks any longer. With 4K video I still face some limitations for realtime work inside the machine, but there's ways to mitigate even that with some forethought. And so any machine build today is likely to still be useful for at least half a decade now, imo.

That’s my hopes.
My i7 4790/5775C boxes are old, but they worked so well the spare parts weren’t needed.
My first Xeon workstation.
We’ll see if it lasts like Xeon based Macs.

Hello,

You think your 4790 is old - What about the poor old Q9450 on 775 !!!

I've gone for one of these
https://www.asus.com/uk/Commercial-Serv ... P10S-V-4L/

It's on the C236 chipset, 4 LAN & 4 PCI slots - to go with a Xeon E3-1245 V6 @ 3.7 Ghz - 4.1 Ghz boost - This is of course with the PCI cards in mind. It's a 4 core similar to 7700.

So dawman I see what you mean about less on the board and less latency - eg - no thunderbolt / no audio / no PEX8747 / - M.2 is possible via pci-e or even Intel 750 or similar -

I’d hold off on the C236.
Might be Asus implementation of it.
Xeon is 3.8 but shows up as 4GHz.
Worked well for a few days then the PCI Overflow messages.
Went back to the i7 4790k.

GaryB is going to fix it for me.
If that doesn’t work I also sent along an ASRock C236.

If both boards do this we know it’s the chipset.

Stay tuned.

Hi dawman,

Are you talking about your build of C236 with E3-1275 V6? - (not the iBase Q370)?

I've already got the Asus P10S-V/4L - Which could be used for other purposes other than Scope - I've gone for the E3-1245 V6 as it was quite a lot cheaper than the 1275-V6

How could your machine work OK for a few days then go wrong?

Who knows.
Finicky shit.
My H97 Z97 Q370 all work.

Plus I only used Scope without the ASIO Software.
Once I started calling up projects I get the PCI Overflow.
Same thing with the Z270 and Scope 5.
But Scope 7 and Scope 5 were tripping on the C236 and the guys from Plogue checked the log files I sent and simply remarked the drivers are seen, but turned off after detection.

We’ll know more later.

My dealer ScorpTec are flogging the SuperMicro X11SAE mobo w/ C236 chipset

https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Mot ... 934-X11SAE

Is this a good board/deal ? Better than ASUS ?

Gotcha. Well SuperMicro is taking a PR beating right now from Bloomberg, but nothing has been corroborated or substantiated anywhere else. Plus the allegations are about Chinese hacks to steal data from servers in data centers.

I personally have super micro machines going back to 1998, and find their boards very reliable. My scope machine has been running since 2001 and is also supermicro motherboard. The few times I’ve had to deal with their tech-support I have found a top notch and very responsive. That has not always been my experience with ASUS. However ASUS has less expensive options that you can likely upgrade more frequently, and will come with options that consumers look for such as LED lighting headers.

Thanks for the review. My current mobos are ASUS (on both the music machine and the office machine). Ive been keeping an eye on the supermicro as a possible alternative for future.
