i7 920 price drop, as low as 20bucks

Post by FernandoHood »

Was reading online that the first generation i7 processors, the 920, are now as cheap has 20dolars.
I have been looking around and the rumors seem true, this is a great cpu! In my experience the 920 competes even with the most recent ones.
This is good news and good times to build a very affordable studio/scope Pc :)

The i7 920 is a very nice processor. I consider this the i7 Era we are in and 920 was the first generation of truly great computers (and much better plugins quickly followed, as well as more people using low-latency). Mines is going on 8 years old and I use it every day. My computer is built like a tank and no parts have broken or died on me the only changes I made were for minor improvements (better fan and silence-foam) and the motherboard in the beginning due to incompatibility with SCOPE XITE-1. The i7 920 was the first of truly great processors and is still a nice processor. My only gripe is that more GHZ is needed at higher samplerates now for me due to the latest plugins more commonly able to eat up a whole core at 96kHz now by themselves (but I still get by for now). At 96kHz it can be a little slow for some plugins but at 44kHz its still fairly powerfull. $20 is a steal tho and for many people they couldn't go wrong with it since it's still a impressive processor.

My i7 920 is one of my best Studio buys ever and I plan to use this computer until the bottom falls out.

Just make sure when using Bloomdale X58 board that the PCI-e bus isnt using the Marvel controller.
We had lots of problems here with all manufacturers boards at first.
Everything eventually got straightened out but MSI X58 boards were the only ones that didnt have a problem.

I used an MSI X58 and i7 950 for 5 years.
Solid build for XITE-1 guys.

SoundDesigner, if you feel its getting too slow maybe Overclock it, there are a few manuals around most of the i7 oc tutorials are done with this processor anyways, you can squeeze alot of performance from it overclocked. Now i dont know how "scope friendly" that is :P

Dawman, I used with a asus pt6e motherboard wich inst a very good MB and I luckly never had problems.

I thought about overclocking several times but decided to stick it out with the 2.67GHZ Stock speed till the bitter end. I didn't want to shorten the life, create instability, or damage something since I don't know how and might be unlucky when trying.
