Ya hear it alot in my tunes recently. It's called biwa in Japanese, and peepaa in Chinese. But what's it called in English?
Here's a pic.
You can see me and my biwa in the new and improved workspace.

And as strange as it may seem, this instrument is played vertically, with the bottom set on my lap.

a "biwa" is called biwa in English
http://www.jinjapan.org/access/music/instr.html

it's of the lute family.
n Europe the Lute was introduced into Europe by the Moors during their occupation and conquest of Spain ( around 711). The history of the Ud is ancient, going back far beyond written history that currently exists. Through the crusades and trade, the Ud was spread throughout Europe, and it was adopted as an instrument by the Europeans. Frets were added and eventually the strings were doubled. It became known as the Lute (and much later, as guitar).

i haven't been able to find if the Ud comes from india/china, or the contrary.

nice pic kensuguro!

aha! That's it. The lute. I remembered my aunt or someone saying that word and I was like, was it.. lint? link? fluke? Well, I guess I was sort of close.

Right now, I'm working on simulating a tsugaru style shamisen(fast and percussive) on the biwa. It's really killing me because the biwa I have right now is a chinese biwa, and it's not built for hard picking, where as the Japanese biwa is built for striking with a pick. The strings go out of tune very fast. Not to mension that my hands aren't built for fretted instruments either. My fingers are killing me!

Hey Nestor, the picture has to be on a server somewhere for it to show up. I checked the path for your picture, it points to your harddrive! Email it to me if you need help/dont have a server, and I will send you the exact line to put in your message for it to show up.

This is me singing some Rap, yeaaahhh! What I won’t do to get an SRB… myyyy God!!!

Now seriously, this is me doing some funny Rap at a university-end-course. I was wearing a “pyjama” trouser and a Hawaiian chemise, which is like mixing “Marmalade” with “Chile con Carne…”

We had so much fun together; it was a great unforgettable night. Im’ not a Rap man you know?, but it’s fun to Rap now and then… Of course the hat it’s a digital addition to the pic.

Cool to see some faces (and neat dresses!)

It seems that Ken has started some family album thread, and once we have enough pictures, we can do a sort of collage like they did with pictures in rainbow gatherings!
