Which Windows is the best for Scope 4.5?

Post by memo »

Thank you for your interest.

I'm a Scope 4.5 user on Windows XP.
I have 2 Pulsar cards(6 and 4 DSPs).
They work fine on Win XP(and also fine in XTC mode).
But I'm considering upgrading to Win 7~10 from Win XP.
I will upgrade to Scope 5.1 from Scope 4.5 later,
but not right now.

Which Windows is the best for Scope 4.5?

1) Windows 7 or 8.1 or 10?

2) Windows 32bit or 64bit?

3) Do I need to install a virtual machine(Hyper-V, VMware, etc.) on my new Windows to run Scope 4.5?

4) If needed, which virtual machine is the best for Scope 4.5?
Hyper-V(XP mode) or VMware workstation or Oracle VM VirtualBox?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

well, if you run compatibility mode, v4 will work in 32bit win7/8/10, but not completely or correctly.

for win7/8/10, you need to upgrade to v5.1.

v4.x is best in XP. why are you upgrading the OS? unless there are new apps that need a newer version of windows, or if you will use a lot of cloud-based apps, there is really no advantage to upgrading the OS.

Thanks for your reply.

I agree with you.
Actually, my desktop computer was broken a few days ago.
It's hard to find motherboards that support for Win XP.
I have to think about it.

Thanks,

if you're buying a bunch of new stuff, then why are you stingy with v5.1?

how about an HP xw4400 from ebay? you can find one for between $100-$150 including shipping and they can run XP, Vista, Win7, Win8, Win10. they usually have a Core2 Duo which isn't a speedster, but should still be plenty fast for current apps.

Sorry for my late replies.
I searched for some posts about Windows here.
I hope I will be unstingy soon.
Thanks for your suggestion.
I will keep that in mind.

v5.1 on Win7 32bit is the best configuration IMO. Very stable, and you can still use the samplers and wav oscillators in the Zarg synths etc.

The tradeoffs for going 64bit isn't worth the extra memory potential on a scope system IMO.

For 4.5 like Gary mentioned XP works best, however, it's not worth the hassle unless you happen to have a running xp box already. Upgrade scope!

AFAIK you wouldn't be able to just drop you old HD into a new build and have the system work. Unless there are tricks I don't know (I'm sure there are but I couldn't find them when I was trying to do the same thing) you'll need to do a new XP install on another hard drive, but I don't think Microsoft will authorize new XP installs, so unless you are using some enterprise version which doesn't need the online authorization you'll need to upgrade to 7 at least.

you can still authorize XP installs.
if you drop the old HD into the new machine, you can make it work by doing a repair install. this will replace system specific files with new ones that match the new system. everything else can stay the same. the windows updates will need to be redone after finding a internet explorer 8 download(update and authorization won't work without ie8).
