How could I get a bass sound like this ?

Post by JoPo »

I'd like to know with what electric bass and which fx, maybe distorsion, amp, whatever, I could obtain the same sound of bass... I love it too much...
Some bass players may have the secret...

Thanks...

it's difficult to identify the exact model - but it's a modern bass sound
Warwick Streamer/Corvette comes to mind and the bass Nestor mentioned in offtopic recently can do this, too
(though I'd expect the latter to act less 'aggressive')
from a mixing point of view such sounds are very hard to tame, the growl just cut's through anything
(as your example proves)

That is the GROWL I'd like to obtain ! I already heard that kind of bass sound in other tracks but not often. The attack is very short and powerful, I believe there is some saturation, but not only.... And that's the point.... I'd like to know....

modern bass, good player, good DI, a little compression, a little overdrive.

that's just the sound of the instrument/player. nothing special. the sound is not made by stacking plugins or tricks.

This is what I would use to get that sound :

PLUS (to boost the growl) :

Come on, Gary ! Don't you hear that sound ? What ever you do on a modern bass, you won't get the same. Just... Euh... What is DI ? Because compression + overdrive won't be enough... There is a kind of growl and no player can make a string growling...

I think there IS some pedal/amp tricks.

-> Dante : yes ! That's almost it. In the mp3 I posted, the sound is a bit more dark. I know the orange tree one, good one ; but I don't know Cerberus... Is that a reason plugin ? If it is, I can't use it : they don't release anything in vst format ! I really think it's stupid !

Ah ! No I've found it in vst's ! Thanks a lot ! I'm going to check that... :)

Gary is absolutely right on the sound - there is nothing special about it
the sound comes by itself from a certain type of pickup and it's placement
btw 'growl' was my polite version to describe it - I usually call that farting ... :P
it's a sound that is often appreciated in fusion (because solo work gets more upfront automatically)

but it takes a hell of a player to make it groove - Stuart Zender from early Jamiroquai was one of the few who nailed it
and where did Stuart eventually end ? with a classic Fender Jazzbass... :D

Precision and Jazzbass are the most common for recording because they simply fit best in most mixes
it's what makes the girls shake booty (or whatever that's called today...)

I have such a 'modern' bass myself (heavily tuned with a fat Bartolini Humbucker at the bridge position)
just like you I once thought: wow, what a sound...
it still IS impressive, when I plug it in - but within 10 minutes I'm fed up

if you're looking for a bass that can do (somewhat) that kind of tone and the 'classic' ones: Peavey T-40
one single disadvantage: as heavy as lead
check it out - this is the clip that made prices jump from 150 bucks to ...

Do you mean the growl comes from the way the player does ??

I don't have any bass guitar, I don't play bass either.. And I have the nerve to want to make play my pc the bass with this sound ! :D I'd just like to know how I could tweak some bass sound to get the sound in the mp3.

If you are a bass player and tell me it's a player technic, I would be really astonished but why not :o ... But I'm not so sure, I don't hear often bass sound like in the mp3, if it was a player technic, I would hear it more often, it's very special, maybe it's better to cut a bit high frequencies to hear just the bass.

I gonna ask on a bass player forum ! :D

well, if George Duke can do, so can you...
Spectrasonics Trillian probably as close as you can get to bass on a keyboard
the clip is fairly old but brings up the major points quite well

Trillian is good but I really prefer Scarbee bass stuff, they are, to me, the best from all sample bass libraries. I use also Waves GTR amp which has bass amp and I'm very happy ! But I don't know how to achieve the sound I ask for... :(

Check that one ! : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FjwQEFSbOY

Yeah Kuassa do VST ! Some dude on ReasonTalk just said the Tube Preamp on Cerebus is da bomb - gonna try that out next, coz I had it just set on FET. Reason's Line 6 license runs out next version (Reason 9), so Reason users are evenly devided between Softube and Kuassa for guitar amping. To me Kuassa wins and is on par with the Softube amps on Scope - however I cant use the Scope ones any more since they dont run at 96Khz.

So Kuassa is top of the pack. This fat number for $35 buckaroonees is a steal... http://www.kuassa.com/products/cerberus ... ifikation/

Sure it growls, Fra ! But I don't get inspired with synth bass, I tried often without any chance.

I must try fretless bass... I've got one from Chris Hein. His upright bass rocks ! For upright, he is the one.

I gonna try Cerberus : 35$ ! Sure ! With a fretless and short notes ! :D

with sixstring Bass...
Try experimenting with settings..
Best bass I have ever heard.. Much better than trillian spectrasonics..

Also sixstring el.guitar.. best sound in the market.

Six String is one of the rare Scope device I don't have ! And I must say that I mainly use Scarbee bass stuff, they are exactly what I need and like. MUCH better than Trillian !
But Scarbee didn't release any fretless or upright bass yet. I hope they will !! For those 2 particular basses, I use Chris Hein ones, very good. I never have been able to be inspired by bass synth, that's why I don't have Six String. Thanks for your tips !

Hello,

I have a Warwick streamer, and I can definetly make it sound like that. Specially if I pass it through the SW dynatube plugin.

There is maybe a bit of overdrive. A nice trick is to duplicate the bass track, put a distortion plugin on one of them (G.O.S.T. Saw should be a killer), then mix to taste

Peter made a bass synth plugin you can try:
http://forums.scopeusers.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32605

three-o-three could also allow you to get a sound close to it if you want if more 'synthetic'
