tube devices

Post by borg »

Hi,

Through the years we've seen many devices that promise us the warmest sound if you run signals through...
Too many to mention. My room is packed with all computers I ever had, just to get all devices, projects, presets,... on this one machine.

Apart from all the woes this brings, what are your preferred vintage tube warmer devices for Scope, and why.
Which devices are better for which types of material (stereo mix, drum loops, accoustic tracks,...)?

Thanks!

I bought one of these

http://bravoaudio.com/bravo2.html

and realised it had shitty sound quality for music, so now I use it as an aux send from my Sonic Core system as an outboard distortion unit!

Those harmonics are from a sine input. :-/ really bad for music listening!

borg probably had the software approach of virtual tubes in mind - but as you started with hardware...
most people think the 'sweet' sound of a good tube amp depends on glowing bulbs
in fact it's more influenced by transformers, an almost integral part of the circuit design
that's why all those cheapo devices like the one you introduced suck...
which (of course) also applies to the software version - for the very same reason
no transformer - no 'sound' :P

I never found any of the afforementioned devices useful, it's just mud
some of it more fine than other - but after all it remains: mud :D
(possibly a remedy for over-brittle signals ?)
I'd rather prefer real hardware of good design

cheers, Tom

Somebody will eventually invent some Dual Tubed Headphones.

The 1s and 0s and mere coloring and do work for bringing some bigger character to thinner content.
I even fell for the film composers all chatting up Satin by u-He as the best Tube/Tape emulation, Buss Compressor, fattener ever made. Some of these guys have credits and aren't just cackling Hens.
I bought it and immediately felt like I got suckered into more 1s and 0s, hardly useful for live work, but luckily it happened to have the best Tape Flange I ever heard from a PC, so I fell in the toilet and came out smelling like a Rose.

Then again there's this.....
