Been wanting to chop up resonating pads in time with percussion to get that classic trancy sound. Tried with the Vocoder, but the pads have a "drum" attack or "impression" rather than just a clear (but chopped) pad sound.

Anyone got a smooth side chain gate out there that doesn't rely on frequency range, just dB?

Thanks!

i believe huicholity has made what you are looking for: http://www.huicholity.com

and while speaking of gates:
Orbitone's Da Choppa is also cool:

as is Defex's "dubaduck"
http://www.neutron7.com/

or, could be made in Modular with an envelope follower . . .

Yup, da choppa (it's not a bike, it's a choppa, baby) is pretty slick, midi gating rules over traditional side-chain gating. You can also use the Z Filter or Modular to perform midi gating with the benefit of having precise control over the envelope of the opening.
