Testing Windows 10 - error driver install

Decided to experiment with Win 10 64 bit. Allowed Microsoft to upgrade my Win 7 Home 64 install to Win 10. Tried installing Scope v5.1 Xite-1 and received an error

Error:InstallDriver returned-2

So my question is, what do I need to do to properly install Scope/Xite-1 under Win 10. I'm not a Windows power user so a simple explanation will help me greatly. I remember having to jump through a few hoops to get Scope/Xite installed under 8.1 but I don't remember exactly what I did. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Ok - found the solution. I'm sure many of you knew this but I found the solution here:

http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to- ... d-drivers/

It has to do with disabling driver signature verification. Once I followed the instructions it worked perfectly. Not sure what other annoyances I'll run into but getting Scope to work is a big one for me. Will update this thread if I experience other problems or successes.

same as 8.1.
it's the new windows way. they don't like unsigned drivers.

google "disable driver signature enforcement windows 10" for specific instructions.

also, once installed and with Scope open, go to "run" and type "services.msc" and hit enter. when the services windows opens find Windows Audio, right click and choose "restart". do the same with "Windows Audio Endpoint Builder".

Well... it's hard to say for sure yet but all programs are installed and running as expected (sort of). I've noted a few strange things with Samplitude VST graphics but I can't tell why that is happening. It might have been a driver or something. Samplitude has it's own share of annoyances going on lol. I guess they all do.

As far as Scope/Xite/Samplitude working as expected, all I can say is it's working. But I've already noted some ASIO dropouts. More than I was experiencing with Windows 7 and with relatively smallish projects consisting of only a few tracks and a few VST plug-ins. I believe I have all the audio tweaks I could find in place. I'm going to be running lots of tests today. If I find anything catastrophic I'll chime in. I'm not sure Windows 10 is God's gift to the recording arts and sciences but it feels stable in spite of some of the background nonsense going on with the OS. I think I turned off all the background spying stuff. Apparently we have no control over updates but since my machine is rarely connected to the internet I'm not sure that's a problem. I've been running Win 10 on my home laptop now for a few months and nothing bad to report there except for the forced updates which create annoyances every so often. Those updates come without warning or any indication which I find annoying. I guess it's the future.

I hope it isn´t.
If it is, it´ll force me going back to hardware completely and use the computer for what it really is, an entertainment- and office- machine.

Yeah - the world of desktop computing is heading off into strange territory. Every time Microsoft farts we pay the price lol

yeah, the computer industry wants you to be 100% online with just a terminal. no more personal apps or files, everything on the web. the beautiful thing about the cloud is that whoever owns and controls the network controls(and typically owns) all data on the network.

the thing is, there's no reason to be on that merry-go-round for people whose primary goal is making/producing/recording music. there's this incredibly stupid and naive idea that "if i only had that newest_____that everything would be great, i'd be awesome and the music would finally sound good". this just isn't true at all. ALREADY, there are more than enough quality tools to make most anything that anyone would want to listen to. that doesn't make new things or ideas stupid, it just means that the plugins, programs and things aren't the biggest impediment.

get something that sounds great and does what you need it to do. then what else could you possibly need? if the computer is fast enough to do the work, then it's all good. most people don't need anything new for dozens of years. again, that doesn't make new things bad at all, it just means that the salmon-level need to swim upstream and spawn all over a new machine is vastly exaggerated.

there is zero reason to use win10 over win7 RIGHT NOW. however, win10 should work fine, it's a nice os. it's also full of stuff that a music-only machine probably shouldn't have or care about. there are a number of users who seem to be happy with win10. i'm sticking with win7 until i have to change. heck, i still use XP on a couple of machines with no issues whatsoever.

Even worse, the only alternative is dying out slowly.
The last Mac Pro to be considered the alternative is the abandoned PCI-e version, the big alu-mac.

The OS is as good as it always was, but the 'new' black tower mac isn't an alternative anymore.
No PCI(-e) slots, and Thunderbolt compatibility requested. There's a HDMI (for audio outs) port available btw, if I'm right.
For a switch to Thunderbolt I would need an external PCI-e chassis with Thunderbolt, and I won't go that road.

Weird, there is a Microsoft with a relatively high unsecurity factor regarding company policy and also operating system meant for universal hardware, and an Apple having a great system meant for dedicated hardware, but chosing the wrong hardware.
That's even silly.

I'm afraid I will still be using a such-and-such 2nd hand old (but perfect) Mac Pro PCI-e version till I die 8)
At some point I will stop upgrading for anything (system upgrades are on 'ask' here, krizrox  ), I will close down the internet connection, re-new the system back-up on two harddisks, buy me a box SATA harddisks and some SSD RAM, get some right cell backup batteries, and get back to work.
Not really what I had in mind, a system freeze...

actually, PCIe, Thunderbolt and Expresscard are really the same protocol. an XITE with an Expresscard interface connected to a Sonnet Technologies Thunderbolt to Expresscard adapter(inexpensive) would work perfectly.

Me too, Win XP on both of my audio machines for the time being.
Just aquired a Win7 32Bit licence for 30 bucks which will go on my 3rd machine soon.
I don´t spend much money on computers anymore, they don´t make any music better.
But I want upgrading Presonus Studio One Pro to version 3, so Win 7 is required.

I´ll ditch Phead Reason or use it as it is because they try to force me going 64Bit.

Even on my office machine there´s still WinXP and against all the lies about "the non-supported OS" catching virusses and malware.
Avira still supports WinXP SP3 and Malwarebytes works too.
There are no virusses or trojans on my computer.
I don´t even own a smart-phone, no need for it ...
I´m using a dumb cellphone, internet services de-activated and w/ a prepaid card.
It´s all about others can give me a call when desired.

I´ll never use any cloud based computer-terminal in my home,- never.

I had no issues with Win 7 except for some reason I was experiencing these hard to troubleshoot error messages about copy protection. I had updated my mobo firmware a week or so ago and started seeing these odd copy protection violation messages. Couldn't make them go away so I decided to set about the task of a fresh install. I had a couple of days to kill so I figured why not. As I was working I decided to check out the new Win 10 OS. Just for grins. So far, everything is working fine. Maybe better than before. For some odd reason my new graphics driver is making the display monitors look better. Not sure if that's due to Win 10 or not but it was a visual improvement so that was a small added benefit.

Another problem was odd random pops (might be called dropouts) that I was never able to fully diagnose or repair. Time will tell if that problem was taken care of in the transition.

I have a couple more things to install and a session this afternoon so if all goes well I'll leave it like this, make a system backup, and not think about it again for a while.

One thing I will add: every time I do this there's usually an unexplainable side-benefit in that I fix some minor annoyance that crept in over time. I always learn something in the process and I've found that knowledge helps somewhere down the road. I don't mind investing the time even if it's for naught.

I just bought a refurb Dell Latitude E6420 ATG with 4GB and a 160GB SSD, Win 7 Pro, Express Card Slot for under $200. For $17 bucks I added another 4GB (max) and splurged for a 500GB SSD in the media bay ($129). It's an i5 2.6-3.0 GHz and so far handles anything I throw at it. It came looking like new inside and out.

I think this is Gary's philosophy applied. For around $350 bucks I got everything I need for a live audio machine running native. If and when I could afford an XITE, it would just plug right in. Right now it has a 12 year old Echo Indigo I/O PCMCIA card (up to 96Khz) that sounds as good as anything out there. I lucked into the Dell ATG because I needed a machine with the PCI Express Card slot just to not let the Indigo go to waste and see if it would be a live workhorse. So far so good! No plans on upgrading the OS.

This MO worked perfectly for my "new" Scope 5.1 workstation: HP XW4600 set up with specs supplied by Gary about a year ago. Also started out under $200. I added RAM, SSD hybrid drive and a cheap NVidia with some more RAM on it. The final deal was less than $400 including the 5.1 license upgrade. That's my main studio machine with 3 SC cards in it. It has the occasional Scope quirks that I've (we've) always been used to) but they're never showstoppers (maybe a reboot or project reload once in a great while). No plans on upgrading the OS.

Basically, applying the concept I got two machines, one stays inside and the other hits the road, for $750 - which is less than half of what my base hot-rod i7 8.1 Pro custom laptop cost me (which I'm scared to take off my desk; true it has 6 external drives connected but that's not the only reason). Prolly has most every VST ever made, which puts it well into 5 digit territory. The Dell has only what I need and am currently using.

Happy native and Scope camper. Thank you Gary!

Does disabling driver signing still work? I tried it and I'm getting the -2 error still. Test mode watermark is on and I manually disabled driver signing too.

This is for Pulsar 2 though not XITE, maybe that's the issue?

Cheers

I´d be interested in a step-by-step tutorial how to manage using SCOPEv7.0 x64 w/ Win 10.

I just aquired a Lenovo W540, Intel i7 quad 2.5GHz stock speed, 6MB L3 cache, 256GB SSD, 20GB RAM, expresscard 34 slot, USB3, USB2,- even a individual true Thunderbolt port too.
It looks like new (no scratches, dents or such), battery is 99%, almost new PSU replacement and came w/ Win10 Pro x64 installed.
Payed EUR 366,- shipping included.

Actually I managed disabling all in UEFI (as also Windows OS) possible energy saving options and running all cores stock speed permanent, while true speed is 2.59 GHz.
But it´s still not perfect because when running latency monitor (and the 32Bit DPClat app), a TCP/IP driver and some APCI driver might disturb the scenario after some time,- in fact after more than 2 hrs or such.
(Interesting: The same happens when testing my Win10 x64 office machine,- Intel i3 quad, 3.6GHz, 6MB L3 cache on AsRock Z390,- for audio)

I think there are still options to optimize.

I investigated a bit and understood it´s impossible making "disabling driver signing" permanent.
I hope I´m wrong and it´s not true, just because,- who want´s to do these ajustments every time again and before using SCOPE ?

In fact, I really hoped SCOPE v7 is for Win10.

I also aquired a used S|C expresscard w/ HDMI 1.3 high speed cable but didn´t try to install before asking here.

All instructions (in german as well) are welcome.

thx in advance

:)

Bud
