XLR Line Selector Audio Switcher Splitter noise

Post by fidox »

Hi !

I have purchased little audio switcher with 3 XLR inputs and 1 XLR output to my monitors.
I have 2 computers under the table and before when i wanted to switch cable between computers i needed to go under the table every time  (exercising, hehe)

I have connected now both computers to audio switcher , but now, i can hear some hum noise coming from monitors, i can hear it also when browsing net or when CPU is loading something.
Before , when i had connected cables directly from soundcard to monitors was ok.

If i switch between channels on audio switcher i'm getting better result from computer , which is also connected to switcher.
If i change cables between computers i'm getting at least from one computer hum noise, no matter which computer is connected.
So i guess, it has to do something with audio switcher.
I was thinking, has does something to do with grounding this little switcher , can i try and how to ground this little box ?
Any suggestions are welcomed :)

Instead of grounding, you likely want to break the ground of the offending connection(s) coming in. However you may not need to do that to every device in the chain.

First I would disconnect each device and test each in turn to find the culprit, unbalanced at the source side is where you start testing. If you do have an unbalanced output feeding an input on there, how you break the ground differs from how you would do so for a balanced connection at both ends (source and this device).

Alternatively, a few devices like the EBTech Hum Eliminator can achieve the same thing.

Thanks Valis for your answer :)

Ok, i have tried now just with one input connection, there's no hum.
I have connected cables back, second computer is off , and i can hear it again.
I have also switched cables between and it's the same, so just when i connect back to second or third input, i can hear it.

That breaks the shield for you, only beware that if you reference above there are quite a few ways to do this, and each method depends on the case that you face. This is where it is good to have cables that can be 'unscrewed' at both ends to be 'repaired'. A bit of work and some heat shrink tubing is all that's required to adapt these fellows to any use case scenario you might face...

aha, thanks, i see.
cables are all new, the only thing i'm going to test next week is, that i'm getting other cables to try, which have 6.35mm jack (from Luna II card) to XLR switcher and not like now, i'm using smaller 3.5mm jack + adapter to 6.35mm to XLR.
