Strymon Pedals w/ MIDI

Post by dawman » Mon Sep 10, 2018 3:38 pm

No need to brag about the sound quality of the Timeline and the Deco.
But the control is phenomenal.
Bucket Brigade Delays, Urs Major model, Tape Models, Analog, Digital, FM, etc. etc.

Deco is a true Dual Analog Reel to Reel Tape Flange Pedal with Lush Chorus, etc.
Run this in a feed back loop into the Timeline, do a loop of Tape Flange chords, then go to instrument over dubs with Delay.

To kick on Tape Flange anytime you want you just hold down the B Button.
A Button is analog overdrive which is really quality dirt too.

Check out the MIDI.

Probably the best Delay/Reverb and Tape Flange I’ve ever had.
I’ve automated the Strymon Timeline and it’s also very powerful routed into the XITE-1.
The Tape Flange and Tape Chorus actually taught me how Hendrix got such a great sound in the studio.

And guess what, they both run off of SHARC ADSP-21469W Chips.
I’ve got these running in a feedback loop to each other, and used on an AUX Channel for my Tiny Mixer.

What rack are you using jimmy? I dig that foot level plate and the look of the construction.

Guitarists I know spend hundreds on custom wooden or plastic pedalboards.
I don’t need hidden power supplies and don’t even need the Pedals by my feet now that I’ve automated them.
But the Aluminum wheel chair ramp for street curbs and doorways was 40 bucks, and when I get old and worthless I’ll have one waiting for me.
I use those solid rubber car wheel stoppers to elevate to the proper angle.
So I got a nice angled board for 60 bucks.
The FX Pedals go on top of my sub under the 4U rack.
Buying the Big Sky MIDI Reverb next.
It’s another excellent sounding modern Reverb.
The sound is so thick you have to use PreDelay or you’ll drown.

I’ve put all of my racked FX, Converters, racks and PA on Craigslist and Reverb.
Sold 2 TC Fireworx for 650, got 400 for the TC Finalizer.
Spacestation v3 sold for 500.
My basement has 2 full QSC PAs and mixers for auditioning gear.

I make sure my Ammo cases are in plain view and when prospective buyers come over they see me cleaning my guns.
Not that I’ll shoot somebody but don’t want shoppers getting any ideas.
The place is packed with a wall of racked hardware and a wall of Speakers.

I love SHARC ADSP-21369 Chips.
My XITE-1 is the best sounding Mixer/Audio-MIDI interface I’ve ever owned.
I’ve heard many other performers using various cards with Tower PCs or laptops and there’s no comparison.

I heard a German Cat was using SHARCs to recreate a Leslie Pedal called Neo Ventilator.
I didn’t want to spend the money as I had trouble with Pedals before and keyboards. They have to be able to accept line level inputs. But guys using Nord Stage and Hammond SK boards were shutting down their Leslie simulator it was so good.
I bought one and it sounded fantastic.
Since then I bought a Strymon Deco, one of a kind and fantastic sound.
Bought the Strymon Timeline and it’s like having Wolfs Matrix, Celmos Tape, RoyTs Bucket Brigade, and dNa’s Prime Time in hardware. The sounds are fantastic.
So now I’ve bought the Strymon Big Sky which is also MIDI Controlled and it’s beyond criticism.
It’s without any artifacts, it’s sound is incredible.

I’m trying get away from lugging PCs around and might be close if the Integra 7 works out.
But I managed to get SHARCs into my hardware only rig. So I won’t be missing any of the FX thanks to Strymon.

But if this doesn’t work out I’ll be taking my A16 Ultra and running these pedals through Z-Link into SpaceF and RoyT Mixer AUXs. I mean I already spent the money and the Big Sky is the end all Reverb.

I can’t say enough about the quality of these Pedals.

If I owned Pulsar cards and an A16 Ultra or non Ultra I’d use the mixers and synths only.
Your basically adding DSP Chips to your card with high quality FX.

Cheerz

Well this sounds so good I’m going to drag another rack around.
A16 Ultra using Z-Link is nice.
I’m running Strymon Big Sky, Timeline and Deco into AUX 2/3 & 4.
AUX 1 still uses dNa FX rack with Pitch Shifter as a Chorusing effect.

Also have the HX-3, SE-02 and Code 8 into the A16 Ultra.

I’m so pleased to continue achieving better sounding results when I spend money.

These Pedals are incredible.
SHARC DSP Chips just rule the SPFs....

Add another Strymon Pedal again.
Mobious.
So now I’m using XITE-1 mixers and MIDI Devics only.

AUX 1. Strymon Deco Dual Deck Tape Flange and Overdrive.
AUX 2. Strymon Mobious Multi Modulation
AUX 3. Strymon Timeline
AUX 4. Strymon Big Sky MultiDimensional Reverb

Fuck it.
I was trying to shrink my rig because I ain’t making shit for money. 100 is a good night.
Usually 160 for 2 nighters so I was like fuck you, here’s just enough.
But I just can’t do that.
I have to add Code 8 and the Strymons.

More gear. But it sounds great.
Fuck, go hard or go home...

How's the rotary on the Mobius compared to Ventilator or Lestor?

No money in Reno. California is sucking the life out of everyone around there.
Move to the islands. Lots of vacation babes, lots of money, lots of live music. Too many Raegay bands :D

Don’t need the money anymore.
It’s just insulting to think 975 a week was I made there in 1986-1991 just doing a lounge gig.
These cheap bastards squeeze the quarter until the Eagle screams.

But new toys keeps me occupied and I’m with my family.
One door closes and another one opens.

Th Leslie sounds good for Guitars because the high speed has the Blackhole Sun sound dialed in.
But I’m using the HX-3 Organ Module Leslie. It’s pretty good.
Mobious Chorus, auto swell, phaser is outstanding in scope.
Tape Flange is the very best.
Reverbs and delays are unrivaled too. Especially Bucket Brigade stuff.

A16 really shines at this.
Perfect for ZLink.

Ah, I see. Fam comes first always!

Is your A16 dip switches set to the +4 or -10dBv
I'm thinking if I set my A16 output switches to -10dBv maybe it might solve my instrument level requirements to some of my pedals.
Although simply adjusting the volume down clears up the distortion but I usually have to jack the levels when it gets back into Scope.

I'll keep a look out for the Strymon gear though, one thing is certain there are loads of used guitar pedals always for sale

Heres the scoop.
I’m running these as Mixer AUX channels, not instruments, so +4 for my needs.

Master FX Module/ZLink-A16 Out > Strymon Stereo inputs > Strymon Stereo outputs > A16 inputs/ZLINK Master FX Module.
Each AUX in any Scope Mixer, I’m using RoyTs 4 AUX 16 Stereo Channel Mixer.
AUX channels are true stereo and whatever instrument you’re playing you can add Tape Chorus or Tape Flange AUX 1
AUX 2 would be whatever Mobius sends.
AUX 3 Timeline
AUX 4 Big Sky

The Channels EQ is pre Fader.

I’m going to try other mixers when I get a chance now that Scope is basically using a single SHARC on the 1 dozen 21369s.
SpaceF will come first.
Then 2448 so I can try adding extra channels for FX so they have EQ.
But EQ isn’t necessary as of yet.

I’m so impressed with the Reverbs quality. It’s using a SHARC ADSP-21469 chip which is why it has 12 types of Reverbs and sounds like an old PCM70.
Doesn’t sound weak like Behringer Mixers or VST Plug Ins.

My main beef with VSTi’s is they sound behind everything rather than wrapping around the audio source.
It ends up sounding somebody hung their jacket or coat over your speakers.

The biggest bad ass sound I have is the Code 8 getting Tape Chorus from Deco on AUX 1 and a multi head Tape Delay w/ short delays and feedback giving me 7 repeats where each one gets grittier, just like the sound of Steve Millers keyboard guy on Fly like an Eagle.
Having the SE-02 on low end drones while play chords on Code 8 parts my hair.
Tonight I got a big wooden stage, FOH and Lights, great PA.

I’m going to bring my 12 inch sub for this room.
Should be FAT.

On another note my attempts to replace high quality sampled instruments with hardware modules failed.
Tried every module out there and I can’t sacrifice my Horn Sections or Strings for factory brass or whatever else they’re selling.

Moral of the story, ended up discovering Pedals I was unaware of, got a cool Radial Mixer I can use Post XITE-1 / Pre Stage Monitors.
I’ve been using Brainrox MonoMaker and Mixers Master Volume.
Now I can add volume there instead of reaching for the cabinets or using BrainRox or Master Fader in Scope.

Master FX Module/ZLink-A16 Out > Strymon Stereo inputs > Strymon Stereo outputs > A16 inputs/ZLINK Master FX Module.
I assume you are referring to the Ext effects modules in Scope tools menu?

Those are really handy modules. Sure cleans up the project window and you can use them in insert effects slots.
Have you tried running 3 or 4 modules in series and do you notice any latency?
I have mine hooked up to a patchbay so i'm thinking maybe it might be smarter to use that to do a series config.
Anyway, as always thanks for all the info. I always look up the gear you post. Gives me something to drool over :P

thinking about such things is a sure sign of becoming a good engineer.

btw-that is why the dip switches are in groups, so that you can use part of the unit for consumer gear and part for pro gear. both are good.

I guess ADI.O is doing really well too.
My Portfolio shows Analog Devices is a solid investment. Even after the horrible October, worst since the 2008 crisis, the stock rose by 2.39%.

Strymon Pedals and UAD Apollo’s use the ADSP-21469 chips.

What’s really interesting is how Juergen managed to attach DRAM to each Chip in the XITE-1.
64 MBs if my memory serves me well.
Don’t think we even use that, but I don’t know.

It’s nice to see that SHARCs are being used in audio gear everywhere now.
I guess Scope DSP was ahead of its time.
