Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
Security related performance hit on Intel processors but not AMD :

Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
If you're running a hypervisor on linux, or any form of 'container' stack... then yes. Up to 50% hit with the linux patch & virtualization is bad bad.
For WinXP? hah! Modern MacOS & Windows haven't patched yet, so we'll have to wait & see what the impact is.
A more serious concern is the number of long known vulnerabilities & issues that are coming out now. Intel's IME & this alone provide a large enough surface to drive a truck through will anything important on anyone in the last 10 years.. (and this ASLR bug potentially goes back to 95 for intel CPU's btw).

Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
While the "Meltdown" breach is hitting intel CPUs, both AMD and Intel CPUs are vulnerable for the "Spectre" breach, so they are basically both compromised.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Disk streaming might be affected according to scientists at Gearslutz.
Might be another Cattle Call to get everyone “updated.”

Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
I won’t see an AMD CPU I want until the end of 2018.
Roadmap indicates a fast Quad w/ GFX due out 2H/18.
Even then I’m not buying gamer gunk mobo.
I need server class.
Sad, to get that class of mobo we must travel back in chipsets to 90 series with Z97/H97.
I might just keep burning through my Z/H97s for a few more years.
No sense fixing something that works.
Intel and AMD has everyone jumping through hoops atm,

Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
Well in that case Ill keep going with what I have - which is pretty damn good. The rest is just gear lust. For gaming Santa got me an Xbox One X and a 27" HP 4K HDR monitor so no need for a gamer gunk mobo either.
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
So no reason to run Reason on Ryzen?
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
Definately but that reason doesn't Xite me if its not XITE compatible
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
who said it's not compatible?
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
No idea. I said 'if'. To me, 'if' means its *effectively* not compatible until its been tested to be compatible. To my knowledge it hasn't been either tested or confirmed to be compatible on this site or S|C site unless you know otherwise ?
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
nope, but "untested" could also easily mean "working until proven otherwise".

Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
Well I ain't layin down 2 large based on semantics....
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
you need to earn more money...
you could spend that much on one compressor,...

Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
? Last time I looked a Manley Variable MU was around 4 large - or a SLAM 6 large !
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
see? cheap.
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
It only slows it down 1% - 3% and future patches will be faster. They are patching all operating systems for this. I would not use AMD for music.
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
I researched it. Cubase users report either a very minor hit or better performance AFTER the update.
Re: Another reason to consider Ryzen ?
This is nothing more than Int€£ & Micro$oft realizing how most folks just read a headline, then go OMG I’d better upgrade my CPU and join the Micro$oft Cloud or I won’t be “current”.
A great reason to go with Ryzen is their upcoming Quad Core CPU w/ Vega GFX.
High Rez triple screens and adequate power for DAWs.
Not to mention AM4 Sockets don’t make you buy yet another Intel Chipset that requires mo’ money for power you’ll never really need unless you’re writing blockbusters and 128 MIDI Tracks triggering VSTs and 100 crappy tail making reverbs.
I’m gunning for that CPU due out in fall.
However, the i3 8350k from Intel sure looks nice.
My biggest beef is no boards yet for 1U Rackmounts, not even Supermicro.
Int€£ released so many new chips and sockets manufacturers are just trying to score some cash instead of giving us Perpendicular DIMMs found on no frills Workstation/Server boards.
Hoo Ahh to AMD.
