Great article Brooks: The Avalanche of Distrust

Post by hubird »

Great and lived article by David Brooks about conspiracy theories, paranoia and distrust, with a self destructive effect on politics and life, as reflected on Planetz:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/13/opini ... ction&_r=0

[now watch the frustrated hatred instead of an interesting discussion getting posted here]

Quote from Brooks:

The true thing about distrust, in politics and in life generally, is that it is self-destructive. Distrustful people end up isolating themselves, alienating others and corroding their inner natures.

Over the past few decades, the decline in social trust has correlated to an epidemic of loneliness. In 1985, 10 percent of Americans said they had no close friend with whom they could discuss important matters. By 2004, 25 percent had no such friend.

When you refuse to lay yourself before others, others won’t lay themselves before you. An AARP study of Americans aged 45 and up found that 35 percent suffer from chronic loneliness, compared with 20 percent in a similar survey a decade ago. Suicide rates, which closely correlate with loneliness, have been spiking since 1999. The culture of distrust isn’t the only isolating factor, but it plays a role.

The rise of distrust correlates with a decline in community bonds and a surge of unmerited cynicism. Only 31 percent of millennials say there is a great deal of difference between the two political parties. Only 52 percent of adults say they are extremely proud to be Americans, down from 70 percent in 2003.

The rise of distrust has corroded intimacy. When you go on social media you see people who long for friendship. People are posting and liking private photos on public places like Snapchat and Facebook.

But the pervasive atmosphere of distrust undermines actual intimacy, which involves progressive self-disclosure, vulnerability, emotional risk and spontaneous and unpredictable face-to-face conversations.

funny, just like you said...

the following is my own message. it does not reflect my opinion as mod, nor is it a statement from SC.
Willy Wonka – Pure Imagination Lyrics
{Hold your breath
Make a wish
Count to three}

Come with me and you'll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look and you'll see
Into your imagination

We'll begin with a spin
Traveling in the world
Of my creation
What we'll see
Will defy explanation

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanna change the world?
There's nothing to it

There is no life I know
To compare with
Pure imagination
Living there, you'll be free
If you truly wish to be

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanna change the world?
There's nothing to it

There is no life I know
To compare with
Pure imagination
Living there, you'll be free
If you truly wish to be
enjoy your time there!

Alas, you can't switch between private person and mod as it suits you.
You're always the mod, and the mod should stay away from serious content.
And the mod is acting without respect for a forum member, trying to insult him with childish quotes from the year 1971.
'Enjoy your time there'...

So, me donating under such conditions?
Not on my venue my friend.

Oh give it a rest hubird. Gary can have an opinion as much as anyone. The only time I would be irritated by this would be if he deleted or censored posts that he doesn't agree with. So far he hasn't edited your posts and I can't imagine a scenario where he would, that's just not his character.

It seems that you are as self-destructive as those you criticise. So from what I read in your post we should just trust everyone so that we don't become lonely and suicidal. I'm quite happy with my level of distrust, at least I live in the real world and not Willy Wonka land (ironically I'm working at the London theatre this Sunday that stages the musical Willy Wonka).

RIP Gene Wilder.

another frustrated conspiracy mind, supported by the moderator who indeed is part of the evangelism.
John turns around in his virtual grave.

Well, everyone may think what he wants of course...except that the moderator should stand above the thing.
But he can't...

Don't blame me, I'm only re-acting...

Btw, the article is from sep 13th 2016.

I really don't mind what it's called, things keep changing as they ever did
today it's just a flood of rubbish published over digital channels worldwide
I know that a 2 person plane crashed on an isle in British Columbia...
ok, sorry for those on board... but do I need to know about it 7k miles away ?
someone has a flashy idea, publishes it on YT, the thing goes viral
a lot of attention, but is it relevant ? in what context ?
people are people - and they are easy to 'activate' - in Germany we have a 1000 year experience how this works
it did happen and it will happen again, shape may change, same action

but the moderator is only acting according to moderating rules - a kind of job
I'd appreciate the personal Gary as a person, as ever ;)

cheers, Tom

Distrust does not alienate me.
Maybe the author sampled the wrong section of society.

Distrust pissed me off.
I actually participated in my first primary then realized it was rigged.
Proof came via leaked emails.
Now I'm going to participate even more in 2020.

Just an honest government.
Not worried about me, I survived these 2 Crime Families for decades.
Want my son and grandchildren to live free from gangsters and dishonest lawyers.

Americans are tired of killing folks, time to get out this regime change business.
Let's go to Mars or something.
