Ufff, there are too many to be named, I don't right now have the mind into it, but in strings, you will find many variants. Of course, you will have to chose the one that best suits your needs.

for super awesome solo strings, you could go to the local college or university music department and get a human...

Cool :P But it is so much fan to do it oneself, even if it is not "that" good!

you asked for violin, so here's violin, in a shabby environment, live on stage, probably cut with just some SM58s ...

thanks for the link! that guy can play that thing. Would love to get that instrument, a lot more reasonably priced than the Eigenharp.

it almost appears that learning that instrument would be almost as tricky as learning the violin. it looks super cool, though.

Nestor, music is only really wonderful when others are involved, either as participants or as listeners...being impressed with one's self is pretty boring pretty quickly, imo. :)

And worth learning for expressive controlling of Scope synths and mpe devices/instruments.

Scope is easy to setup with these type of controllers/instruments and the expression it brings is 'earmazing', not to be missed.

Actually i'm seriously considering the Sylphyo to replace my Akai EWI4000s when the time comes. I like that it's a lot shorter and can fit into my carry on luggage. and it's got 5 octaves. Great job on the design of that.

Yes ! Thanks for the links ! Very interesting, even if wind instrument or string (piano / guitar) inspires me much more than violon for solos...

I believe that the benefit to learn that incredible instrument is that it is a midi controler -> you can play any midi synth / sampler you want, that's it. If one want just play violon, of course, the best way to achieve that is to learn to play violon ! And if one wants to play violon in an orchestra, I don't believe the best thing to do it to learn to play a midi controler, even if it's an amazing one and load a violon sample library thru a computer, amplificator and speakers..! :o I think your violons players colleagues would look at you in a strange way... :P

Can someone tell me what the guy has in front of his mouth ?
I guess it's a midi controler... But how does it work ? Blow ? What does he control ? Swam expression ?

Thanks..

It looks like a breath controller

http://www.tecontrol.se/products/usb-mi ... controller

http://www.midisolutions.com/prodbth.htm

http://www.mrtaudio.com/?gclid=COuA07Sy ... GwodET4Ezw

Your breath controls the value of cc message, e.g. the stronger the breath the higher the value.

Not sure if any of the above are the one in the video

Here, you can check how Sample Modeling tenor sax is good and the 1° breath controler on the list (the other Sample Modeling sax (soprano - alto - bariton) are as good :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDH2MEXwaFQ

Yes.. That looks very interesting to control Swam sax expression with that kind of breath controler ; much more than the mod wheel. The mod wheel could control the growl level, for instance... And be able to control 2 crucial controler when playing with one hand..

I'm curious to know how the breath sensor works mecanicaly inside the device... Could be a propeller... Probably. Or a pressure sensor, with a spring somewhere... I don't find any info about its functioning on the links.

That one looks even better for vibrato ! Just bite it !

I'd come to the same conclusions about its workings, there seems to be a good few ways to capture/read air pressure/flow with microchips, from a mousewheel with a propeller to those working in a similar way to a police breathalyser. I remember reading the first edition of the tec controller suffered from a collection of spit in the breathing tube, this problem fixed now in its latest version. Many of the current breath controllers use piezoresistive pressure sensing.

Synthtopia has a round-up of videos describing the use of breath controllers and the different types

Building a breath controller

Make an arduino breath controller

Interesting video links in the responses to building a breath controller with max/msp

I'd be interested in anything you find out
