My new LG DVD writer is not reading any cd or dvd i had CD writer which i replaced with new DVD? Its not reading the installation DVD do i need to upgrade my PC or any other utility to use DVD drive If we have CD writer cant we replace it with DVD writer im really confused as i bought this new DVD writer ??/ pls any help?

are all cables (data and supply power) properly connected to the drive ?
if your board has both ide and sata ports then you may need to set in bios which is in use.
is the master/slave jumper set (in case it's an ide drive) ?
otherwise (if you just replaced the drive using same cables as before) it's probably dead
there is no difference (for the OS) if it's a CD or DVD writer
