SDK / Synthesis thread by John Amolochitis/sur-audio lab

Post by fra77x2 »

I have decided to create a thread here in PlanetZ giving details
about the Scope SDK and digital modular synthesis in general.
I will present the software, common procedures, efficient working
and then i will start presenting synthesis methods.
I will post youtube video links as well because writing is pretty boring and confusing at times
and some things can be presented easier through a video presentation.

This is unrelated to sonic-core, it is a personal contribution.

I'm not sure how often i will add to the thread but i would be happy if anyone finds the information useful.

Most of the material can be implemented in the modular but personally i prefer the sdk because of the extra freedom.

I have to ask to be forgiven in advance for any mistreatment of the English language as i' m not a native speaker.

----------
Step 1.
Get the SDK for the Scope hardware you own. Install it and apply the patches it needs to work correctly.
If you are afraid of the sdk, have limited time, skip this step and use the modular.

Getting the sdk and working with it will not make you a "developer".
It will strengthen your synthesis ability and will add an extra sound/device design facility in your hands.
Any work in the sdk can be transferred to any other modular or be coded in a programming language.
It will work the same if you have the same modules/ apply similar signal processing.

Step 2.
Create a folder in your hard disk named "Lab" or anything.

Step 3.
Get an oscilloscope. I would recommend Wavelab (any version i have 6.0) because it offers all types of necessary
analyzers:
a. Level meter
b. Spectrum analyzer
c. Spectrum
d. Oscilloscope
e. Waveform scope
f. Pan/Phase meter
g. Bit meter

--------------------------
p.s
Please avoid spoiling the thread with unnecessary or off topic replies.
Feel free to add your own contributions but please do it in a organized manner, no big pics etc.

next: the software

Hi John,
Looking forward to this SDK thread, thank you for taking the time. Which version of the SDK is it best to have?
Cheers

This looks really useful.
I've got some great ideas for new synths, I want to buy the SDK but I'm broke at the moment
(just lost my job, so other things are more important)

Thanks again

Corrections:

Video 1//

Video 2//

Why use pitch modulators and not just a mixer to provide the filter cutoff?
Because the cutoff frequency should get modulated in an exponential manner and not just change linearly.

Sync stands for "synchronous" (not synchronized).

"Long2long"-> automatic connection between a "sync" (synchronous) pad and an async (asynchronous) pad.

Hi John, Useful tip, thanks.

I only just saw this thread, not had much time lately so was doing some catching up over Easter and I noticed that all the videos are gone now. Could you please repost them up again or provide a link where I can watch them again. I was trying to brush up on some sdk stuff from when I took that course with you before so these videos would be useful. Thanks.

And happy Easter :)
