VM will only help with a dozen op memory eaters in the background that are not in use... active programs including STS take up computer memory.
You need more free memory, VM can only free up the space of other programs. You will also notice that for some reason SFP memory decreases when some panels are not in use for a while, the data gets read back from disk when the panels are accessed again. So you could try to save memory like that. Although I'm afraid all this memory management will be 'a drop on a hot plate', it may be a temp fix.
