New Windows 10 installation - how should I tune it?

Post by petal »

Microsoft are dropping support and updates for windows 7 in a year and music technology I own (Elektron RYTM) are starting to drop support for windows 7 already, so I am now in a position where I have to upgrade to windows 10.

How should tune windows 10 in order to make it work the best it can with Scope 7?

Are there anything else I need to be aware of using windows 10 for audio?

(Feeling hopeful) Is it ok to upgrade or is a complete reinstall from scratch needed?

And last, I managed to not use the official free upgrade path to windows 10. Does any of you guys know of any reliable way to upgrade for free now?

Cheers,
Thomas

Have you got a USB installer for Windows 10? - If not, get one - it doesn't have to be a new copy of Windows 10 - Just a rescue/recovery/Windows 10 USB installer - I got one off Amazon a few days ago.....

With the USB Windows 10 rescue/recovery/etc..... you install Windows 10 but use the Windows 7 license code - Keep the machine connected to internet - and if the Windows 7 key is genuine - you'll have a fully activated Windows 10 --

On fine tuning - I'm not sure

But grab Macrium Reflect cloner - register it for free - back it up etc..... and backup the new install to another drive ----- (just an idea) I cvame accross and its worked great.

You can still use Windows 7 for Scope -------

EDIT-or you can create your own

I'm just creating one now - although I bought one from Amazon for around £14 which installs Windows 10 32 and 64. The one I'm creating from the link below is for 32 and 64 but I'm not sure if it is Windows 10 Pro or not - but I'll see how this pans out for the next install which may be helpful to you

Thank you very much for the input!

Yes - I have a USB installer on a USB key and downloaded Windows 10 using this official Microsoft tool:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softwar ... /windows10

I also have my old windows 7 key, so I guess I'm good to go now?

I do recall seing a post here about some Windows Online services that gets installed with Windows 10. Services that are recommended to "turn off", but I can't find it.

I can't comment on Windows services but I am interested in that to get the optimum installation.

OK, I've created the Windows media installation tool - so it looks like what I bought off Amazon was exactly that but I didn't realize this. Due to the work I've got done there are no complaints and now I've created my own and you have too by the looks of it.

So it looks like all is needed is to plug the USB into the USB port of the machine - get into the BIOS (if needed)-and boot from the USB drive into the "boot loader"- This may happen automatically.....and you'll see an option for.....Windows 10 32 or 64 (if the created media)___was created with "both" - "both" being - 32 & 64 - If there is only one option there say__x64___then another media would need to be created with "both"___

Also when the media is created it is for "use on another machine" ___let us know how you get on _ :) -It's good to get things sorted out :)

Then Windows 7 >>>> becomes Windows 10 - :)

Cloning the drive could be a good idea just in case in future it's not possible to use WIndows 7 license codes

so what if M$ isn't supporting win7?
i guess if your machine is not just an audio machine it might matter.

the basic tweaks are the same as in win7. in addition there are a few things you might want to kill like Cortana and the integrated OneDrive. there are a lot of web articles like:
https://www.howtogeek.com/356642/how-to ... nnoyances/
https://www.cnet.com/how-to/10-things-t ... indows-10/
https://www.cnet.com/how-to/5-privacy-s ... indows-10/
https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions ... s-10-home/

win10 REALLY needs to update itself, or things get screwy. it is possible to take control of that by marking the internet connection "metered". that way Windows will wait for your permission. it will still check for updates, and the checking for updates really should not be frustrated completely.

I'm aiming for a "one pc to run it all"-concept here, and I want to integrate my RYTM with Scope 7, so there's no real way around windows 10.

Thanks for the links Gary - I'll check them out!

And here I sit, with 8 different machines each doing its set of tasks... :D

The Elektron RYTM is a drum machine:

I would need another room dedicated to my hobby in order to run a complicated setup like yours Valis :)

Well as luck would have it, this is the room that feeds my family and houses my setup. So it's worthwhile, and all of us should be so lucky imo.
