DIY AD/DA Converter

Did anyone tried to build a high quality Converter?
I am looking for a breakthrough in hardware equipment, taking my chances in manufacturing equipment, for now simple audio effects and amplifiers but some day I would like to try myself in high quality mix consoles and converters.
