Re: Laptop
Some rackmount and laptop adventures here. A bit dated but might be useful for comparison purposes or if you decide to buy 2nd hand.

Re: Laptop
I just don't understand how you can put a whole PC into 1U rack. That's VERY little space. Where do the cards plug into? My desktop probably wouldn't even fit into a 12U rack and I have a small case.
Why not wait for cheap Celeron M motherboards to come out? That thing doesn't need a fan, just a tiny heatsink. But it's not fast at all. I think I benchmarked an 800MHz dual core once and it was around 30GIPS. My old desktop is pretty much at 180GIPS. So it won't be any good for software plugins, but it will be small and cheap. And if you're just using it for Scope, it won't matter...

Re: Laptop
Another 1U rackmount solution would be a Mac Mini with the Sonnet Rackmac Mini and a Sonnet ExpressCard Adapter for Thunderbolt.
Here you'll find more infos and some pictures: http://www.hitfoundry.com/issue_26/mac_mast.htm
Keep in mind that newer Mac Minis only support 64-bit Windows versions. So if you need a 32-bit Windows you should get an older model with Thunderbolt. (It might be possible to install 32-bit Windows on the newer models with some workarounds, though. I'll probably try that here soon.)

Re: Laptop
Yes, but that's a PCI riser card. Doesn't Xite-1 need PCI-e?
I did find some miniature PCs WITH one PCI slot at a decent price. I think they're made in Canada eh? But they're no speed monsters. Let check my history from last night.

Oh, it's not cheap. Around 1500$ and it's not that small for some reason. But it has no noisy fans.

Re: Laptop
I use a tiny little pci e 1x riser that is the male end of pci e connector.
It has a ribbon with connections for the XITE 1s male connection.
Wraps right over the top of my Samsung M.2 pci ssds.
The best sounding audio solution deserves the fastest SSDZS.
SMALL 1u rackmount smokes any 5000 usd apple synth computer.
I use the same massive orchestral instruments as Mac guys.
They have to freeze and render. I use mine live.
Different strokes for different folks.
Thanks to studying several builds by GaryB when he use to fly to vegas I build the baddest 1u rackmounts around.
A few hot shot movie guys asked my advice and then thanked me as they were surprised how fast and efficient they are.
Dont have to have the fastest or biggest.
