Off The Shelf PC for Scope Cards?

Post by samplefiend »

Hi all,

Newbie posting here but been using a Scope system for a while now. :-)

I'm not really into building a PC as I don't have the know how or confidence but might need a new home for my Luna II and Pulsar XTC cards. Can anyone recommend a ready built system that can run both cards without any problem and also have enough free space inside to house the Pulsar XTC which is pretty long by PCI standards?

I have an old PC that would run them but unfortunately the Pulsar XTC won't fit in but if I get something more up to date then I can maybe have everything running off the one system. Then I'd need another PCI slot for my UAD card.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Craig

ok, if you were in or around the USA, i was going to offer my services.

there are a number of computer manufacturers that make machines that will work. the main thing is to avoid socket 1155 motherboards like the plague....

Hi garyb,

I'm thinking about building a new computer to house my Pulsar II that's been in the same computer running Windows XP for many years. I've been reading the threads here trying to make sense of what I need to get. It would be great if you could post a list of the exact parts that you used to build a new PC that works with the scope boards.

Thanks!

Have a look at these guys or give them a ring.
I had one of these recently - fast as lightning & quiet as a mouse.
You'll need to speak to them regarding the slots though for the cards.

Whereabouts in Scotland are you?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the link, I'll look into giving them a call!

Does anyone know if the spec on this would be suitable for running a Pulsar XTC and Luna boards as a standalone Scope machine?

I'm looking for something cheap to replace the PC I have my Scope in for now as it's a really really old slow PC but it's the only one I have that the XTC card will fit into as it's so long.

Cheers again

pentium4? yeah, depending on the motherboard it will probably work ok, but will it really be an improvememt over what you already have?

at least look for a core2duo or quad. the HP XW 4400 are cheap and readily available on ebay.

My Scope PC at the moment is a Pentium III 933 with 256 Mg ram so anything is an improvement! ;-) I'm not looking for a mega studio PC, just something that can run my Scope cards easily as a standalone system. I like using my Scope as a modular system and feeding the results into my main studio PC.

HP XW 6000 workstations all day and all the way - solid as rock pci ports and ability to manually disable hw in the bios (eliminates any irq / pci bus sharing issues right away)...
Plus twin Xeons processors and exceptional cooling. You should be able to get one on she-bay or similar for well under 100 euros !

Here is a reply i did last year when going through the same process (go to page 2 for pics).

Machine has been running absolutely perfectly for approx a year now.

Good luck !
