Don't buy Supermicro X8ST3-F-O for Pulsar cards

Post by quantum »

I don't know how I missed this but I bought this motherboard not realizing it has 3.3V PCI slots, and NOT 5V slots, which Pulsar needs. Sure there are adapters, but it would be a huge pain to secure two cards. So instead I bought a GIGABYTE GA-EP43T-UD3L V1.4. Still waiting for it to arrive, but from what I've read, it's supposed to be one of the most stable boards ever for the LGA775 socket.

The MSI x58 Platinum I had was overclocked and a ram slot died and then it kept freezing after an hour or less. It's a great board for Scope cards but can't be overclocked as the IOH idle temps are 65 celcius.

what, are you going to cut open the expansion case and engineer a new spot to attach the card's mounting flange to? because that adaptor will only work with a low profile card in a normal case. even worse, it's performance probably won't be stellar. i'm sure it'd be fine for a lan card....

No, i'm not touching the case. I got a bunch of LGA775 parts for a new old school build. just wanted to see if this adapter works.

that's what i'm saying. how can you use the card if it won't fit in the case? :)

yea i see what you mean, the adapter would raise the back connectors to the point where they're not usable :D

but i won't use the card in that pc case with the Supermicro board if i have to cut the case. i mostly bought the adapter to see if it works at all, not thinking about anything else lol. from what i can tell now, i will probably lose two adat i/o. and since i made the mistake of even buying the board, nothing really matters now so i'll just build a gaming pc from it.
