building a new home for my Pulsar II

Post by Stevil »

my old DAW is getting on in years so i'm scrapping together a new (to me) system.
picked up this on ebay:
-GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R-SLI LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
-Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601920
-Kingston HyperX T1 Black Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model KHX1600C9D3T1BK3/12GX
-COOLER MASTER Hyper N 520 RR-920-N520-GP 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler Compatible with Intel 1366

Also picked up a second Pulsar 2 Card & will need to build a STDM cable to connect them

these arrived yesterday from Newegg:
-VGA EVGA|02G-P3-2639-KR GT630 2G R
-PSU COOLERMASTER|RS720-SPM2D3-US RT

Still need to shop around for a Win OS upgrade from XP, case & a hard drive or 2 to wrap things up. Been a while since i built a system, hope it all works together ok.

Looking forward to 32 channels of ADAT, more processing power & the additional DSP. Also i've been working with a video artist on soundtracks for his documentary shorts so hopefully it will be able to keep up with the video i'm writing to.

thanks Gary!

I'd like to be able to use one card in each system until i'm confident in the new one, but I recieved no keyfile info from the seller & if i recall correctly that doesn't transfer with ownership of the hardware anyways. I recently purchased a keyfile.v5 upgrade but that was for my original card. Is this something i can work with S|C on?

no, keys should go with the card not the card's owner.
technically, since Creamware is gone, a seller who does not give you a keyfile is ripping you off, even if accidentally.

i can help you with the keyfile, but if it didn't have v5.1 originally(and you'd need documentaion from the previous owner), i can only get you v4 keys.

pm me and i'll give you a phone number if you want to discuss options in more detail.

i'll contact the seller first & see if he can get me the keyfile. he forgot to send me the breakout cable as well so we still have a dialogue going.

Digikey got the parts to me quickly. got my STDM cables put together & installed last night. hope to have a few minutes to take the additional ports & DSP for a test drive in my old system this evening.

got the hardware assembled this morning. spent half the day driving around town looking for SATA and DVI-D cables. then the bulk of the evening installing windows 7 64bit and battling with hibernate/sleep mode settings. it hasnt zonked out on me in the last hour so i'm hoping it's improved. keyboard shortcuts, copy paste, selecting multiple items were inducing narcolepsy. after digging thru "god mode" settings, power options, registry settings, ect it seems to be working ok, but i've lost the use of the shift "12347890" symbols. one of many complaints i read referred to a keyboard issue so i'll try a couple other keyboards on for size tomorrow to see if that has an effect.

hope to get my adat cables plugged in and take scope for a test drive tomorrow.

GIGABYTE Mobo has pretty good result in masterverb test. If you have extra time, could you post it ?

Good luck anyway ! :D
Creamware Scope 5.1 (Scope Power Pulsar 1.01|3 x Pulsar II|Pulsar I|Syncplate), scope abuser since 2004.

Thank you much ! 13 Masterverb seems to be pretty decent ! :)

I was looking for a upgrade, gygabyte seems to fit for PCI bandwith ... and they still produce mobo with PCI ... so great ! :D

It's a limitation insynthetic tesing only.
Using more than 4 Reverbs withpout bouncing seems a tad much IMHO.
You basically don't several time based efx corssing paths to muddy up a mix.
Good AUX practive allows 1 to plave intruments nicely. Then a couplr for Drums and perc.
Maybe another COncret Hall one for strings an Piano.

Sound like a well designed rig, congrats.

looks like i made a bunk pick on the graphics card. system is using 14MB of it's 2GB capacity.
It's got 2 DVI-D & an HDMI out & it's only using one DVI-D.

NVIDIA control panel says there's no card, while the device manager clearly shows it's there.

Windoze shows code 37 unable to initialize.

reinstalled the drivers every which way. & updated motherboard drivers.
i think i saw some registry tweaks a couple hours back i haven't tried yet.

true.
i have a couple other systems lying around. if the BIOS flash & registry tweaks don't work i'll see if it works in one of them before sending it back.

I am shocked you found a new i7 920.... :o
Those were excellent overclockers, and the 930s were good too.
Not that you need a wqhole bunch of CPU speed, but the boost in RAM speed
does help with Kontakt, VSL and PLAY.

Nice rig.
