Lilas Dance (Mahavishnu)

Post by dante »

Can't claim credit for the arrangement, as it was a downloaded MIDI (http://users.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave.Marshall/mahamidi/) . Voiced it up in Reason and Scope, mixed and mastered in under an hour. There's a nice counterpoint in a middle section that I cant remember in the original, so cudos to the arranger (Benjamin Tubb) if he wrote that. Originally I multitracked a talented friend of mine performing this on a Tascam 244 in 1980 as he was able to play both the guitar and piano parts.

Nice one!

Thanks for the memories! I was heavily into McLaughlin 20+ years ago. Mahavishnu, Davis' Bitches Brew and Zappa were a big influence on the band I was in then. I regularly put on a Zappa record (actually saw Banned from Utopia a few weeks ago in a bar for god sake! Albert Wing was on fire! Good old Tom Fowler on bass! The entire band was top, but Albert Wing on EWI... wow!), but Mahavishnu was a loooong time ago. Too bad I just boxed the entire studio to build a new, bigger one, and as most of my music and record player are stashed away as well now. Thank America for youtube!

More like 40 years ago I got into Mahavishnu. If you're into 70's prog etc, here is a list of Prog / Fusion instrumental covers from that era :

. Jeff Beck - Star Cycle : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/star- ... r-versions
. Genesis - Apocalypse 9/8 : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/apoca ... r-versions
. Genesis - Horizons : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/horiz ... r-versions
. Jon Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/cosmi ... r-versions
. Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/thick ... r-versions
. Mahavishnu - Lilas Dance : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/lilas ... r-versions
. Alan Parsons - I Robot : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/i-rob ... r-versions

Star Cycle and Cosmic Messenger I sequenced from scratch - the others were downloaded MIDI's modified to suit.

Star Cycle is awesome! Nice keyboards. The Scope synths are immediately noticeable. Thanks for sharing!

Cool.
The Piano intro wasn't translated correctly as Grace notes or trills get messed up from quantizing.
My first sequences from the 80s were Yes and Mahavishnu.
I made money naturally from pop like Micheal Jackson and Madonna though.

Speaking of Micheal Jackson........
Guess why Lisa Presley really divorced Micheal?
