The Seventy Three is here!

For those of whom the numbers "seventy three" does not ring a bell, it's the famous Rhodes everyone's talking about.

Anyway, we're talking about a ModIII patch so it's nothing along the lines of what a physmod rhodes can do, but it's pretty darn close, I think. The best I could do was to compare it with my Nord Electro. (Electro has Mark I sounds)

It's quite heavy.. but I still got 14 voices on my Pulsar II. Which makes it quite usable. It's a project with just Seventy Three and dynamixer though.

This is no FM crappy rhodes. Well, I use FM, but the realism is at a totally different level! Download it, and play it for a few minutes. And you'll see.

Mod2 users, fear not!
I just finished converting the patch to good 'ol Mod2 format. It's almost a 100% conversion.. just the presets may be a little off.

ENJOY!

I connected it and just played a while, as you said.
The sound and ´play-feeling´ is fantastic.
I´ve got many Rhodes and E-Piano samples but now I will use your patch instead.
Thank you...

cool! Now I know this patch is in good hands.
I still need to find out a way to implement some more "knock" on the stronger notes (of the mid range) for the funky licks.. And higher notes have to sound more "bell" like.. ah well, there's always room for improvement.

Whether it sounds' 100% realistic, is questionable, but this patch does serve well enough as an instrument of its own. Just love the character and the simplicity.

I tried this patch, and found myself playing with it for more than an hour.... Very very nice cool sound. I love those kinda sounds. It is very playable, and the 'feel' of it is just marvelous. I think i'm gonna use it in my next song!

Hehe, thank Ken!

I've found some features I'd like to implement in the next version... like a more dynamic volume (the patch actually doesn't have dnyamics at all!) And some way to make it stand out more in the mix. Right now, it gets washed away too easily... But oh well, that's if I ever become unhappy with this version.

Glad you like it Marcus! I'm surprised why half the people on planetZ hasn't got it yet. Everyone, come get it!

Thanks so much for a Mod2 version, Ken! I get a little less than 14 voices on my Luna with it , but it sounds wonderful for one hand leads. Makes me wish I never would have sold my 73 .

That's interesting... you used to have the real thing! Man.. I hope you're content with the "replication"..

Also, if you come up with any interesting presets (like how you tuned your old 73), please send them to me. I'm very curious to hear what a user of the real thing would come up with. Me? I haven't even TOUCHED the real thing yet. They're hard to come by in Japan.

I agree. This is a really nice device. Please don't stop developing it. I'm sure it can get even more better.

Regards from Sweden.

Yes, I bought mine in a pawn shop for 350$, with the case stand, apparently no one knew what it was. I played the devil out of it until I had to move, at which point I sold it to a friend that loved the sound. Still I wish I never would have done it. I've lost other synths like that also, my other pride was an original Roland SH-7 with case.

You can still find some of the Rhodes here, but more often than not they have the "push pins" stuck in the hammers, and the tines are completely ruined from abuse. Kinda funny when you think about it, the Yamaha DX7 Tines patch was designed to mimic this sound, and it became so popular that people started putting the pins into the hammers to recreate the Yamaha sound. A vicious cycle of stupidity that ruined a good instrument.

For some reason to me the patch almost sounds closer to a Chroma, but my Rhodes was very bright sounding. Still, its a very good and usable substitute Ken.

Unfortunately, the article stops before it reveals how the JX10 came up with its convincing Piano sound, with more promised next month, but the article does contain the best explanation I've read so far of Hard Sync - worth it for that alone. I'm looking forward to next months conclusion.

Synth Secrets is always worth reading, in my opinion. You'll find links to the first 32 articles on the Links page on my site.

ohhh! great sound, warm and deep!
so i can get rid of the samples and tweak my rhodes.
very good job, few sounds, but i don't like the missing ones... (crappy yamaha and thinny e-pianos, i can't understand how so many good musicians used them, they should buy pulsar and play ken's seventythree...after some corporal punishment of course!)

fantastic!!! nothing else to say...

i only know the rhodes sound from albums, never heard it 'live', but that's not important. what matters, is that this patch really sounds great and that i have been looking for something like this for a long time.

btw, it works on my Mod2... (SFP3.1a mac OS9.1)

I'm more than happy that there are more and more of you that enjoy the patch. It is my honor to be able to support the creativity of such a talented bunch!

btw, maket: I thought that was your speciality. But some sort of hammond sim might be cool. I just need to dig under the Nord Electro and learn the sound.. (and all the vibrato modes too!) But I think the trend here is cool -- "close enough to the original, but kept DSP efficient, with a couple of exaggerated turns of its own"

I know I'm going to have trouble with the 2nd and 3rd percussion attacks though... (some strange compression going on) oh well, maybe next time when I have some free time.

Ohh... I want a Pulsar. I want. Give me. WANT! I'm ordering it tomorrow, after fooling around with the card in the band's studio. And I can promise you one thing: If this patch sounds like a Rhodes, I will use it too. I love the sound... I don't care if it is 100% alike the original, as long as it has the warmth that I like so much.

Just one more week of wait... Ho ho... Santa is coming soon! =)
