I work primarily in Acid 4. I don't do any MIDI sequencing, but I do use a MIDI controller to control standalone VSTi soft synths. I have Acid's audio preferences set to use the Windows Classic Wave Driver, instead of ASIO. I prefer to assign ASIO to the VSTi's for ultra-low latency.

My process: I usually make a beat from drum samples, then record a track at a time (some mono or stereo instrument) using different instruments, until I have a complete song.

I record a combination of real instruments (rhodes, juno-106, bass, guitar, etc) into the Pulsar2 Analog Source by way of my Mackie mixer, but I also like to record soft synths such as Native instruments' B4 or Pro 53 - and Giga samples such as the Scarbee RSP '73 Rhodes.

I don't want to have to switch the device that Acid records every time I use a different instrument, so I have set up a mixer for this. The mixer called "INs to Wav/ASIO 1" combines these things:

* Pulsar2 Analog Source (actual hardware recording inputs)
* GSIF Source (audio output of Gigastudio)
* ASIO2 Source 1 (audio output of any ASIO2 soft synth)
* Wave Source 2 (I don't use this yet but set it aside in case I needed to record the output of some non-ASIO/GSIF application, like Winamp or Media Player)

The output of this mixer goes into Wave Dest 1, which Acid records Windows Classic Wave Driver "Creamware Play/Rec 01." The output of this mixer also goes into the second mixer called "OUT to Monitors." This second mixer combines these things:

* Wave Source 1 (audio output of Acid)
* INs to Wav/ASIO 1 mixer (this allows me to monitor everything going through the first mixer)
* ASIO2 Source 2 (I was fooling with a Vocoder here, I don't know what exactly I ended up doing)

The output of this mixer goes to:

* Pulsar2 Analog Dest (actual hardware outputs, hooked up to my monitors)
* Wave Dest 2 (audio input of some windows program like Winamp or Media Player, in case I want to shoutcast)

Good luck!
