SDK: single vs multiple monitors

Post by capacitor »

SDK arrived yesterday & I spent the night with it on an ancient Dell CRT running 1024x768.

This is a reason to upgrade if I've ever had one. :)

Given a budget of around $200-$250, what would be a better way to go:

Two used old-school LCDs, 17" & 1280x1024 for example. Easily $200 for both based on local Craigslistings. Old & used screens are prolly not quite as good, but anything is better than a furry CRT. I don't care about a warranty if on the cheap.

vs a Single, large 16:10 monitor, such as Hifiboom's 24" 2048x1152.

What would you do? Is the SDK multi-monitor friendly, or is one large piece of glass the way to go?

Its amazing how much monitor we can get for the money :) Not so long ago, 24" at 1080p would be closer to a grand.

I'm playing around with the sdk a bit more, before I spring for the upgrade. My system's old AGP video card might be the limiting factor. If so, it'll be a single monitor at high dpi. It does have dual capability (DVI + VGA).

Whatever monitor you can find/afford, on any production machine a second monitor will increase productivity more than any other system upgrade, and is as such always a great investment.

For people without cash, I used to pick up 2nd hand 17"es and once a 20" CRT for no money (1eu per inch?) and they helped me out big time. If only for an additional 1280x1024 pixels, when you use your machine for anything more than just watching movies, chatting or checking an email once in a while, it's worth it. Do not postpone - money should not be an argument here, especially with all these people dumping their CRT's.

Thanks. I was thinking that as well. I'm going dumpster diving!

Naw, I'm not that poor - plus I've used a number of LCDs (typical Dell stuff, 17" thru 20") and I'd find it too hard to go back. I know it helped me immensely when developing in other IDEs.

My question was really workflow-related - i.e. whether the SDK is multi-monitor friendly. After stumbling thru it the past couple of days, I think it definitely is. :)

Now I have a reason to sell the notebook & put that money into a good LCD setup. I'm thinking of a widescreen main window, with an aux monitor for the smaller & less used (?) windows. For now. Come to think about it, I could make do with a good main widescreen & use the CRT for occasional reference windows.

Of course, I've been watching Hifiboom's thread which has some great setups + advice :)

Wish me luck with this SDK stuff. I am in awe of all the things you guys have done.

Just sent a PM, please respond via that method, and please don't clutter up this thread with personal comments.

Anyhow, we're done here after establishing that yes, the SDK works just fine (and probably is better served) with a multiple monitor setup. :P
