Wonder what white noise would look like? And shelved eq or band pass filtered white noise?

Should be flat across the spectrum..

See what Voxengo Span shows on an Asio feed. Its free..
Not because it is easy, but because it is hard...

On holiday at the moment so can't check again.

I'm more than confident that this is completely accurate.

I'm guessing when fully zoomed out the volume, y axis is exponential. As on a pic on the side it goes (from bottom to top) 12, 6, 3. So all the stuff under 12 is going to be crammed up. 12 to 100 is taking up the same visual space as 3 to 0.

I make drum and bass music so my stuff will always look bass heavy. And high end stuff to be perceived as loud as low end is actually quieter.

Was just struck by the visual difference.

Think I just answered my own question.

Heres a result from playing a piano sound from MIDI. First, a low 'C' ( 2 octaves below middle c) then a high C ( 3 octaves above middle C ). So 5 octaves apart.

So in the course of a norrmal rock mix, most of the activity takes place on the left hand side of the graph.

I'm assuming thats normal due to bass needing more energy at audible levels than higher frequencies ?

Struth, check out the inharmonicity in that low C ;)

:) - yeah, been tuning pianos the last year, learning some craft.

This analyser gives me that "Check those peaks! Nice partials" vibe I get from tunelab :D

sorry for ot, stinkin' hot summer vibes y'all :P

I don't have the plug in, but I see on Dante's screen shot, that the scale is not even. Harmony wise, the distance from 100 to 1K is the same as from 1K to 10K. So it is natural to have the bass area peak higher because it has more "notes per pixel". This is the usual thing with FFT analyzers b.t.w.

Someone post a pic with the y axis (volume) fully zoomed out.

Or Dante do that exact same thing you done with the y axis fully zoomed out.

How do I do that ? Is that the selection box with the '20' in it ? Or something else ?

Yes. Pull it from 20 to 1.

Ok, more even height wise but still all on left hand side. This would be to do with horizontal range rather than vertical scaling, so do we need user definable horizontal range ? EG 5 to 10K would use all the display on some of my mixes but still tapered high left down to low right.

At a Scale of '20', I put through a commercial remix of Bon Jovi 'Dead or Alive' and it went up to 15K, but again, as per your original observation, the bottom end was showing way higher on the graph tappering down to the right hand of the graph where it disappeared altogether at 15K.

I thought there was a problem with low frequencies being reported at higher values than high frequencies.

Frequency displays are typically logarithmic (in the x-axis as shown here), so this isn't unusual. When it comes to determining energy content, or looking at octave bands, this is actually really helpful and mimics how our ears hear. (Octaves double in frequency with each octave, so a linear sweep up a piano keybed is a logarithmic sweep in frequencies).

Cheers for that Dante.

Proves I wasn't going mad about the 3 6 12 on the volume. So 12 down to 100 is taking up the same space visually as 3 to 0. I make drum and bass and obviously the drums and the bass are the loudest things in the mix.
Just with the quick test I did before going on holiday the difference in volume from low to high initially looked a bit extreme, It's all good. I have just been used to looking at analyzers that have an equal volume display going in increments of 10 from 100 up to 0.

This analyzer though let's you focus on a particular volume range with more accuracy.

With regards to the frequency display/axis. That more than makes sense to me as lower frequency has larger waves.

a meter like this shows absolute values, not a weighted db per octave scale. it's working correctly afaik.

Weighted dB per octave - interesting. That's what the Scope Analyzer-30 (which also comes in a blue model) must be doing then. Shown here on Bon Jovi mix :

--------
you are watching blocks of 8192 samples;
some high frequency does not go over this full time;
so they will not show full energy;
for higher frequency use a smaller blocksize;
check with a sinus at high frequency that stays on over the full periode of 8192 samples;
and catch it to have the same phase;

---
the x axis shows most possible measurementpoints by having a loglike scale in the fundamental range;

here you see 220 440 880 1760 Hz at different x axis stretch with a 2048 blocksize;

there is not much difference in all of the views with different stretch;
--

good vibes

i dont know exactly course i have not tested but

i think the analyzer you compared is not weighted or something it is filterbased;
so all that is in the band of the filter shoes up scaled and sort of peakholded;

please compare to a fft analyzer

good vibes

The volume is displayed exponentially right?

As fully zoomed out on the volume axis you have equal spacing
between 0-3 (3) 3-6 (6) 6-12 (12) 12-100

When you zoom in and get closer to looking at 100 the roof of the visual display is that still 0 or is that flying off out of sight?
