I've got the Win8.0 Z87C - i7-4790 rig described here http://www.hitfoundry.com/issue_25/daw_mast.htm

My plan is to get a 250GB external SSD (USB3) and use WinToUSB to make it bootable and install Win10 on it, Scope 7, Reason 10 etc and get a workable dual boot scenario. eg select which one to boot from BIOS.

Once everything confidently up and running on the SSD I could then blow away windows 8 on the internal SSD and setup Win10 there.

Would this be a viable plan ?

why not just put the new drive in the computer and install everything, after removing the old drive?
of you don't like it, put the old one back in.

yes, it would probably work, but it might be a lot more trouble than just de-racking the computer for a day.

really, it's no big deal to make the change from win8.1 to win10. there is stuff to turn off, but win10 works just fine, and it's not that different from win8 except in security features needed to live in the matrix, native touch screen, etc, but most of that is in 8.1.

i understand the emotion. my studio computer is still running xp.

when i next buy software, it will be running win10, at least. my home computer is running win10, i have two laptops running win7, my wife's computer is still xp. i'm not partial, i just hate changing a system that works perfectly fine.

Im running Win10 on my other laptop for ages, so faimiliar with it. Ive got another plan - inside the case theres a second SSD mounted on mobo, so Ill just move stuff from there to USB storage and make that bootable. Hopefully easy.

i guess that's doable.

Coz ive got a few minor issues on the win8, nothing that stops music making - just 2 or 3 annoyances, so I figure it's time now w Scope 7 to get a clean install.

If you want to write something I’ll post it as a single article . It won’t be full mail out though coz I haven’t maintained the subscription to the software that does it. I think I have 3 or 4 single articles and if that gets to 8 I could make a whole issue and post it. If devs send me about thier new products I’ll turn into articles.

It worked. Got a dual boot system Win8 and Win10. All running with Scope 7 PCI and XITE-1D. Application wise the main difference is no Cubase on the Win10 install. I’ll leave it in the Win8 install in case I need to extract any legacy projects.

This Scope 7 update was a great motivator to set up under Win10 - so thanks to Holger and GaryB for making it all happen and propel the Scope platform for the next decade.

In an attempt to fresh install with Win 8 partition (it had a small MIDI error) I accidentally blew away the boot block for the Win10 partition. Partition Wizard MiniTool Free to the rescue - now I got the dual boot nailed - bios selectable.
