Win 10 issue

Post by Mightychub » Mon Jul 09, 2018 12:19 pm

Anyone having any issues under win 10?
Am running latest scope software and I have done everything to make sure it's all set good for audio but am getting digital spikes on recording and playback. Never had this with win7 it's doing my head in been trying to resolve it for the last 4 weeks. Wish I stuck with 7 now.
Any advice would be so helpful right now.

You'll need to dig into your particular system and do the normal audio checks, beginning with DPC latency testing to see what hardware drivers may be causing spikes.

After that it helps to see if you have firewalls and AV software that don't play well with realtime needs, some developers (like Comodo) insist on such total control of a system to 'make it secure' that your DAW will never be happy.

Lastly, NOT every system, nor even identical systems with slightly different configurations, will experience the same issues! So, this is less likely to be "Win10" or "Scope" themselves, but rather a combination of things in your system that may be entirely unique to you. The good news is the above pointers are a great place to start. Beyond that...

How about we start by posting up your system build including processor, motherboard, ram and other attached peripheral cards.

yea, like they said here, every system is different.
in my case i don't have any issues with win 10 64bit pro or win 10 64bit home version, running scope 7 (win pro) and 5.1 version (win home).

-you can try latencymon app and run realtime test, leave it alone some time and it should write that your system is capable to run audio in realtime
-drivers for hardware, software... etc...
-bios check , disable everything that confuses scope, you have a lot of articles here about bios settings

-do you use internal graphic or external card ?
i had issues , crackles and out of sync problems using internal (cpu) graphic, so i put back pci-e card and everything was fine again.

Thanks peeps. Never had this issue in win 7 so am not sure were the problem lies. I have done all the bios stuff disabled everything that needs doing to run pulsar. It's interesting what valis is saying about the firewall that is running all the time never thought about turning it off. I will try that now.
I am running a Asus PRIME H370-PLUS LGA 1151 DDR4 ATX Motherboard, Intel Core i5 8400 2.80GHz Socket 1151 Processor and Corsair Vengeance LED 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz I also have a passive dual HDMi graphics card.
Am running the latest Scope software and driver. I do have a lot of usb stuff attached and I can not get away from that things like Cubase dongle and iLock plus Midi Sport, Maschine MK3 and Liquid Channel and Liquid Mix on firewire card(this is running in legacy mode) Also thumb mouse on USB think thats everything.

computer configuration sounds ok.
i have (my main audio workstation computer, no network..etc) Cubase dongle + usb midi keyboard + usb mouse/keyboard + 1 x usb key for waves software + 3 x creamware cards.
can you try without firewire card , just for test ?

on this computer, which is more for games, multimedia, internet, i have everything enabled, firewall, defender... etc.
older mobo , Luna II cards , Scope 5.1, everything is fine.

Ye I can take out firewire card and try it. Anything is worth a go at mo. All the gear that is attached was attached on the old motherboard which was an Asus. Am running two scope cards both cards are going direct into 2 focusrite adat units. I was worried at first that they may have been a sync issue with clocking but it's too random for that. Will try anything at this point as I have a recording session in tomorrow and can not afford anymore spikes in the recordings

well, ofcourse, i can just think loud, but as for windows 10, it should be fine.
i have installed so far all major updates and weekly updates for win 10 and after updates there was everything like before.
then i'm thinking, chipset , sata ahci drivers, bios updates...
i hope you'll find the solution.
what says LatencyMon app : http://www.resplendence.com/downloads (you can download there home free version)

I have just taken the firewire card off line plus windows firewall. I had the DPC checker running and the max was 1684 and the lowest about 900 played any track through about 4 to 5 times no issues then out of the blue spikes again but nothing showing up on the DPC checker...I just don't get it

I have had to put the studio PC onto the net even though I hate doing it. There seems to be a fair few updates for windows and my motherboard like chipsets so will go down this route and see if it makes a resolve...fingers crossed

I'm not sure if DPC checker shows correct values under win 10, as for win 8 writes "
The DPC latency utility runs on Windows 8 but does not show correct values"
and also at their site doesn't write that DPC checker supports win 10 either.

win 10 MUST update.
there should be a connection or things don't work correctly.

In terms of DPC testing, LatencyMon is the correct tool to use these days.

I test DPC in stages when setting up a system, i.e. initial installation: test DPC---THEN install core component drivers, test DPC again, THEN downloadable graphics drivers, test DPC again, etc. Do not let any other software run when running Latencymon and don't install a bunch of aftermarket drivers at once (the MS supplied ones that come with updates are fine, as these are your basic installation!)

If you have high values from the start, verify BIOS settings, disabling things you really don't need (stick to what you understand, check the AVID/Steinberg/Focusrite sites for tweaks). Normally, a Windows 10 system with decent components runs well out of the box. Only things like WiFi and Bluetooth may cause mayhem, but nowadays even these rarely hurt.

I have also learned to image a system at initial install if stable, then again after the rounds of windows updates (if stable), and then again at each MAJOR stable point (all drivers stable, then all basic apps installed etc) so it's easier to go back to a certain point than just rolling back windows. I also do this on Mac, where it's actually easier thanks to SuperDuper & CCC...

Ehmmm,- does that mean a Win10 machine has to be online always ... also during audio/MIDI work ? :-?

it doesn't HAVE to be, but it might as well be.

Ah that’s put me off. I hate having virus checkers and constant internet connections with audio use.

Does windows 10 offer any benefits? I recently saw you post that scope drivers are windows 10 ready.

the main benefit to windows 10 is that it's current and it supports the current software. in addition, the latest motherboards require it to function fully.

i haven't had any issues from the lan connection. it hasn't significantly affected performance. it's not like XP.

if you have a working machine right now, there's no pressing need to upgrade. all the things that people don't like about win10 are the result of people feeling pressure to constantly upgrade and spend their lives in the cloud.

There's a thread on digital security in OT that has a few links that may be of interest to Win10 users, so I'll re-post that section here and link to the larger security related thread below that, as that's worth a read as well:

I've given out the following links someone in here before, but I might as well share this with all people here using Windows 10. Note that I am giving manual links/information first, but I will recommend some simple applications that automate these things at the bottom of this post:

I like to disable One Drive completely, a I use other resources. If you use OneDrive, *don't do this*!!
https://www.howtogeek.com/225973/how-to ... indows-10/

Disable Windows 10 basic telemetry:

Comprehensive Windows 10 telemetry tweaks:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wDk ... 23icqvs76v

------------------

O&O ShutUp10 is the app that I prefer to use to tweak Windows 10 telemetry, Cortana, One Drive and more
. It encapsulates the above lists and I like it because it's a simple toggle on a case by case basis so I feel like it's still fairly manual, it covers all of the above and more, and it doesn't make changes I don't want or understand:

O&O ShutUp10: https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

The tool below was created to remove a lot of the added telemetry/voice/etc technology in Windows10, this is more of a 'one stop' utility that does everything automatically and is probably a better option for a 1-click 'clean' DAW install where you don't want ANYTHING else running, but since it's not as manual as the O&O version above I don't use this personally (I like to leave Live Tiles and a few other things running, you may not):
