Regarding the HW: you're right. The boards were around 1000 Euro. But the software was reasonable. The Dream dev kit was about 700 Euro and the EZ dev kit for the tiger shark was around 1000 Euro (long time ago, it was actually $). But compared to UAT-2, it's a steal.
