Re: Cheap preamped audio cards

edit: oh, he's got something then. I should read more closely before posting. I was going to suggest the edirol ua25 ex, having the older ua25 myself and being absolutely happy with it. solid build, good sound, fair price, no issues whatsoever...
well, I hope he will be just as happy with his choice.

Re: how much cpu and ram do you really need

Ok, it's already in the offtopic area, but aren't we going even more off topic? Anyway, I have equipped my last machine upgrade to a quad core intel c2q 6600 and only 2 gigs of ram, as it is already four times of what I had before and since I hardly put my faith in sampled instruments but much much ...

Re: A theoretical limit on sampled piano dynamics

I just referred to these typical sizes reminiscent of the last generation of serious hardware samplers and what current rompler pianos are likely to be equipped with, too. In computer based sound reproduction, these values are not of importance but merely to be regarded as a reference. if you know w...

Re: SSD Drives Update: ioSAN New HD Technology

well, sure, if you use several different large and demanding streaming libraries at the same time, that is likely to push the drive over its limit. But that is not a sensible use for the sample libs anyway: just freeze the tracks once you have them sound right, and your drive can relax again. The so...

Re: A theoretical limit on sampled piano dynamics

well Ken, if you need the very large range of physical velocity spread to be happy, get a keyboard that offers the right feeling. I find my old GEM equinox pro 88 does have a rather large range, even the softest velocity curve invites to strike it pretty hard to get the max value out of it. the rest...

Re: SSD Drives

when I last read a review about ssdrives -being curious about that technology for years myself- their comparison to magnetic hdds wasn't all that great as people might have expected. noise and mechanical stability were pretty much the only fields in which ssds had a clear advantage over hdds, but ev...

Re: USB Sticks & XP32

I've only used the corsair flash voyagers so far, and they all perform error free since the day I bought them. one 1gb (really good), one 16gb (slower write performance than it should have, but no errors. sold it) and a 16gb GT, perfectly fine, too. there's definitely no problem related to xp32 and ...

What an unfit christmas present. Doesn't anybody ever seem to really learn from the past? And if they did, how come all those that become political leaders forget most, if not all of it?

Re: Cubase 2 vs 4

It's like buying a new computer. They get a little better every year so if you wait 5 years there is a big difference. I had a problem with Cubase until Cubase SX. That is when it started to get good for me.[...] It's been the opposite with me, I didn't upgrade to any SX version cuz I never liked t...

paul, that looks really nice. Like my very idea what every winter should look like, at least 3 full months long. I mean, sure, summer and sun are nice, but a snowy winter is magic. :)
I hope we'll get some more lasting snow here soon, so far everything that came melted away again.

Re: I Need Heat Sink Help

It's true that some few mainboard/cooler combinations won't fit together, physically. But most do, so don't worry too much. I got a Scythe Mine for my q6600, and performs well enough to keep it running at the lowest rpm, even at fully loaded cpu, making it next to inaudible. The drives are louder by...

In a very vulnerable situation, about a month ago, I was asked by a catholic priest what gives me hope. Obviously, a religious person would have responded: god. What do you think I replied? Re: Free gpu verb

Yes pollux, I know that it's not a matter of the algo itself, but the code it is formulated in. I just simplified the phrasing there, as not everyone has an idea of programming terminology. :) However, ATI/AMD has recently introduced STREAM, which is their approach to an api similar to cuda. And in ...

Re: Free gpu verb

I've never yet owned nor wanted a Nvidia based gfx card. Algorithms like those should be useable on any common and sufficiently powerful gpu available before solutions like that become an option to even think about. Until that time comes and stuff starts working nicely and generally compatible, I wi...
